rotten paint class action suit
anyone else interested in trying to get a class action suit started against the acura division of american honda for the piss-poor paint on these "supposed" luxury cars?
i'm disgusted with the complete lack of paint on mine. i've only had it 5 months and it already has dozens of scratches through the top layer to the primer. originally i thought it was someone at work rubbing up against the car. but it ain't. the paint is less than a 1/4 of a coat thick. it takes almost no effort to scratch through to the primer. i believe i've seen others whining about it here as well.
i know it's not a safety issue. nor is it a driveability concern. but it is a VERY costly expense. and it's an unexpected expense. not to mention the inconvenience. no one should expect to have to repaint any part of a new car in 5 months due to poor paint process given today's paint technology. nor should we have to expect to paint it regularly due to a piss-poor paint process by acura.
it will severly trash the re-sale value. and that's not equitable since it's due to acura's negligence (or just willful fraud).
so, anyone else intereseted? i'm game to try and find an attorney if i can find enough interest. i'm not sure if MD is the best state to get this started in, but that's all i've got. if anyone else thinks another state would be a better place to start let me know. i don't know if i can make it happen outside my state, but i'm game to give it a go.
this situation is unacceptable on a cheap econo box. i'm unwilling to suffer it on an overpriced, misrepresented luxury car.
i'm sure the TL drivers would also be interested since they're suffering just as much as we are.

Live with it. Most paints today are crappy cause of EPA standards. THey can't have as much lead i think it is in them so they are soft and chip easily. Its not just Honda paints, but ours seems to be slighlty worse than some others

You know nothing about lead based paint.
The quality of today's automotive paint has nothing to do with its lack of lead. The use of lead based paint was banned in the USA in 1978. Lead based paint is SOFT, lead is a very heavy and soft metal which is why it was used. Lead based paint, just like latex based paint will chip easily if not maintained properly. If lead based paint didn't chip and create dust (a self cleaning property of lead based paint), it wouldn't be a problem. Lead can still be found in paints today, although the content is limited to 1.0 micrograms per centimeter squared (even less in certain states)
The problem with today's automotive paints is the manufactures need a paint that will set up and dry quickly yet still look good. Finding a happy medium between those two is hard. A paint that takes forever to set up and dry slows down production and cuts profits. A fast drying paint won't look as good yet painting time will surely take less time.

im down the most power to you. My paint job is crappy. everytime i wash it the paint job get worse. I dont think you have a case. I think the only power you have is the power to be a consumer of their product or not. Maybe if you wrote complaint letter they might make arrangemnts for a new paint job?

I generally take great care of my car, and that includes the paint/finish.
However, the clearcoat on the driver door molding has completely peeled off, and now I am waiting to get a new one put on.
The rear bumper has these rust-colored spots all over it, and they are ONLY on the rear bumper. Acura of Troy said that it's not a defect, and implied that I don't take care of my car well enough. Well, I find it very entertaining that these spots stop right at the edge of the bumper, and can't be found anywhere else on the car. Also, the clearcoat on the rear bumper has become really rough to the touch, no matter what I do.
However, I'm getting the rear bumper and body kit repainted (I backed into a curb a few weeks back) and molded in. Otherwise I would consider this proposal.

Find beauty in dissonance
Automotive paint has changed from a solvent base to water/latex for environmental reasons.
The latex clearcoat is extremely sensitive to contamination and formulation problems. They also have a short shelf life and are very expensive. A high end clearcoat is used to cover mediocre paint.
Our paint (and others like Ford and Mitsu) is made by PPG, not Honda. My brother has visited the plant. Union made crap. Poor qualtiy control, stuff gets passed etiher by incompetence or to save money. They don't toss out $1000/gallon clear coat.
My paint is fine. Sounds like some people here have clearcoat that skipped qualtiy control

Only issue I have with the paint on my CL-S is the bumpers do not match the body color. My Stepson paints Acuras, and he said that Honda is not painting the bumpers with the car. They are painted separately in a different location which causes the variation in the color. Also, he said that after 2000 (2001 model) Honda was using water solvent paints. He had to repaint several 2002 and 2003 CL's.
I tried getting both bumper repainted when the vehicle was new, but the dealer said no. I guess I will live with the miss-match. My

believe it or not, my 98 Trans Am has better paint than my 99 TL had. The TL had rust spots everywhere, whereas my Ponticrap has thick beautiful paint.

it's not about why the paint is inferior. nor is it why i am stuck w/ paint repair bills on a new car due to misrepresentation by the manufacturer. it's about finding enough fed-up consumers to work together against those who perpetrated the damage.
i'm not looking for a discussion regarding how or why it sucks. i'm not looking for a discussion regarding whether you agree or not. i'm looking for other defrauded acura owner's who want to pursue damages through legal recourse.
anyone else interested in pursuing legal action as a class?

No problems here...just the usual tiny chips on my hood from road debris. But I wash my car and wax it more often than most I think.

Regarding crappy paint
I've heard Honda uses just a 2 stage process--color & clear. Clear doesn't look "deep" probably due to lack of coats. Not as nice as BMW for sure. Our Sundance Gold still shines deep and shows a remarkable resistance to chipping--we have very few chips. Maybe it's a 1 in 900 thing and they put an extra coat of clearcoat?

Hit it right on the head in my case!!!! '03 Anthricate TLS. I just so tired of the BULLSHIT that fountain acura of Orlando tries to feed me, that I'll never buy another car there or even take it there for whatever reason.

After you get a few more chips...get it repainted at the shop..then it will be better. The paint work that my bodyshop did hasnt chiped or scratched since it was done and I was hit pretty hard some rocks.
Keep waxing the car so that even bird $h!t beads off..
