'Road Dyno' - DIY dyno kit

Has anyone heard of this? I was looking around and came across this product

http://www.charm.net/~mchaney/roaddyno/

Apparently it is a dyno kit that you hook up to your car and it allows you to do a dyno on your car at any time, given an adequate amount of flat road. You record the data onto the product while you're dyno'ing it, and then you hook it up to your computer to get all the dyno information.

It sells for $139 + $10 s&h. Seems like a pretty good deal for people who like continuously dyno'ing their car. Supposedly accuracy is pretty good. Here is a quote from the page:

"Road Dyno measures power by the same method as a chassis dyno. Instead of measuring the amount of power required to accelerate a drum, you are measuring the amount of power required to accelerate the car. This is really what you are interested in anyway isn't it? Some cars may even perform differently on a chassis (stationary) dynamometer because the car is not actually moving. Accelerating the car has an effect on fuel in the bowl of the carburettor (if you happen to have one of those), oil distribution through the engine, air resistance, turbo airflow etc, etc. The Road Dyno Kit will allow you to accurately measure the amount of power your car is putting to the ground, which is an invaluable tool when doing aftermarket modifications. The Road Dyno taught us a LOT about the performance of numerous cars. It identified a 5000 rpm stumble that was traced to an overly sensitive knock sensor. After fixing the sensor, the Road Dyno shows a smooth power curve."

Wondering what you guys thought about it.

Wow, this one seems cool too. But it seems that it wont know the RPM of your car, so it can't exactly give you a dyno graph... And it requires you entering the exact weight of your vehicle to calculate HP and the like... Which most of us of course do not know...

It would be fun to use this and find out how much HP you make while running though

RE: New competition version

1. There is a interesting method that is used to detect the RPM of the car. Sorry, I can't tell you, but it's clever and should work on most vehicles.

2. It will have X, Y and Z sensors for compensation (of pitch, roll, yaw) that improves the accuracy of the current unit (GTECH-PRO). The last I heard there are some minor issues still being worked out to keep it accurate with the car's squat and end-of-run lift (pitch).

3. You can get the weight of the car if want, but a look around in the search; it will turn up some weights of the cars to get you in the ballpark (people have been weighed with them in the cars). The relative HP would probably be of great use. The newer unit is supposed to have the capability to read out the HP/TQ at given RPMs...
