Talking RL BBK on CL

Asking a favor from anyone in PA or NJ who have installed RL BBK on their 01-03 CL. Would like the favor of taking a look at your mods and if possible, try out my Motegi Racing FF7 wheel to check for clearances. I am anticipating on doing this mod but want to be sure that my wheels will have enough room. Wheel size is 17x7, +42 offset, curve spokes, and 1 inch lip.

After that, we can go and grab some bite together.

People say if they clear the 3rd gen TL BBK then they'll work. It doesn't sound like those will clear. Stock TL rims just clear and those are 17x8 +45.

I have '08 Accord HFP's 19' & had to put 15mm spacers (which I hate), but the brakes work good.

Not sure if that helps @ all....

Good Luck

Thanks. I'm looking for someone with Acura CL 2001 to 2003 (living in NJ or PA) who had upgraded to RL BBKs. Just wanted to try out my aftermarket wheels to check for clearances. Your info is well heeded. Have to stay away from spacers as my tires are rubbing the screw that holds the bumper extension into the fender well when hitting a rough bump.

I replaced the rear shocks & it seemed to help. This aftermarket wheel's offset is +42 (which is -13 from the original offset). Should have stayed away from this wheel but just love the 1 inch polished recessed rim.

I can understand that! Those brakes are going to look sick when they are in!

If you have a lip, they wont fit. I've tried various wheels and know that the lip will kill your high offset and make you get a lower offset wheel. But that creates another problem by pushing out the wheels too much and make them rub against the fender.

Yeah...that's why I want to confirm this first before sinking more money into this car. Hoping there is a remote possibility that it may clear.

I had a set of 18x8 with 40 offset, no lip and they wouldn't clear without 5mm spacers. Hope that helps.
Best wheel I found so far are A-spec wheel or 3G TL wheels. They clear without spacers and they are high offset.

I have the RL BBK and before I settled on Aspecs I tried several different wheels with lips 42 and 40 offset but none would fit without spacers. Like aznboi2424 the ones with lips won't work.

Shucks! oh well, I guess I should not have bought those Motegi FF7s in a hurry. Now, I'm stuck with it. Plus, my wife will kill me if I wanted new set of wheels again. At least, I was able to justify these when the factory ones were wrapped & causing the steering wheel to shake. But now, I have no reason to spend more dough here. Anyway.....maybe I'll keep this set until the car is ready to croak & then set my eyes on some new car with BBK.

Well guess it depends on what you want more a BBK upgrade or a particular set of rims or somewhere in between. Like you I bought some wheels that I really wanted but the BBK wouldn't fit without spacers so sold the wheels and moved on to wheels that I liked but not as much as the other set but they worked with the BBK so it was a compromise.

You need to test, as 40 offset on one wheel won't clear while 40 on another will. I had 19x8.5 with 40 offset and they cleared.

Just slap the rims on, paint the calipers and be done with it.. Lol. It's not like u really need amazing brakes on a car that's not amazingly fast.

I use to drool over the BBKs Then I painted the calipers and people asked me what brakes I put on the car..... Got love perception.... It IS reality.

It would be nice if we could buy spacers for the calipers to set them back further then throw on a large rotors on the front and rear. That would be more than enough

It's not just the offset the lip is the problem. I'm sure there are many sets with 40 offset that will fit but not wheels with lips.

Not sure where exactly you're at but I'm in MD between DC and Baltimore. You can test fit on mine if you'd like or are ever in the area. You could always do the Legend calipers and not have to worry about wheels.

Really appreciate your generous offer. I'm in Skippack, PA & it will take me 3.25 hours to drive to DC. I'm thinking maybe sometime after July 2nd, on a weekend, I'll be able to find some free time to drive down there. My wife will be going away to China for 2 months but gotta do this before July 27 as I will be going to China to join her. Between July 2nd & the 27th, if you have some spare time, I'd appreciate your help in checking out my wheel clearances.

By the way, what kind of setup do you have? 12.8" or 11.8" rotor? Do you have RL's BBK?

I have the RL calipers on with the 350z brembo slotted rotrs and i had to use a spacer to get my rims to fit. Below is a picture of it.

Thanks to all for all the info. It gives me an opportunity to select other systems if it can afford me a bit more clearances.

Also, if anyone had installed Racing Brake's caliper on their CL, I'd appreciate it if you can contact me with the info. This is one system I was seriously looking into previously.

Aegean CL-S, nice set of wheels you got. Your wheels looked just like my FF7 but your lip looked like it is even deeper. The FF7's lip is 1.25 inch deep. Just observing yours, it looked like it's about 2". By the way, is your Brembo rotors 300 or 330mm diameter?

The lip has nothing to do with it. The Offset and spoke placement does. Whether they will fit or not all depends on the rim. It is why it will work with some rims and not others having the same specs. I have 18x9.5 with a 2.5" lip and i know they clear my rims (have tried a set to see, and am currently looking at putting on 6 piston calipers from the cts-v). The spoke placement is in the exact same location as when i had 1" lips

Thanks, I've had these rims since 2001 when I bought the car. They are hard to find since they were only made in Japan and imported to the states for a short time. The lip on the rims is actually 2.5". I have always liked rims with deep lips. That is why I had to use a 15mm spacer for the rim to clear the RL calipers. The rotors were the 330mm(12.8") diameter 350Z Brembo rotors, I believe it was EBC Brakes USR7122.

It's amazing how you were able to set it up with the tires still inside the fender well after using a 15 mm spacer. Did you have the fenders rolled?

Looks like you had lowered your CL. Right?

Nice Blue color on your CL. I have the blah Silver. Had no choice as I bought it pre-owned.

Yes, I had my rear fenders rolled. It was rubbing a little bit on bumps so I rolled them for a better fit. I am using Tein SS Coilovers. Raised it up a lil after putting the spacers on so they won't rub.

2 Questions.

Does anyone have any idea how big of a wheel spacer I will need to clear my stock rims on this type of project.

Where can I get the bracket for the Calipers to fit?

Take a look at this thread, it has all the details on how to make the RL calipers fit on our cars and what rims will clear with and without spacers.

Yes, I saw this & that was what got me back interested in the BBK again. I was seriously looking into it last year but stayed away due to incomplete data/info on the clearance between the wheel spoke and the RB's BBK. Now, I have another option of speeding less than $400 for a set of used BBK.

Really don't like the 3G TL wheels as the spokes are too wide (much like a woman in a swimsuit). Like the skinnier spokes on the wheel with the lip (much like a woman in a string bikini )

Below is the BBK upgrade info I got from AustinTaper:

Sure, you will want calipers from an 05 RL, pretty sure 05-08 will all work. A good source is car-part.com

You will need a special bracket to mount them. I recommend upgrading your rotors to 12.8 size, (I bought slotted/drilled from Azine vendor Brakemotive, like them so far) pair them with the calipers and as for the special bracket: 2 options. Try to find the AcuraZine member NAV6 and see if he still makes them. He's done numerous over the years. If not, you'll want to buy the 2nd item on this page, for the rl bracket kit. It says accord rl kit, but that's the one you'll want. While you're at it, buy some Russell stainless steel brake lines, cheap upgrade. They mount up fairly easy, make sure to torque that bracket bolt tight tight. Performance is definitely better and it looks 100% better. Plan to spend a few hundred to powder coat or go cheap with paint but will wear more.

I would think the thickness of the spacer would depend upon your wheel's spoke design (curvature) & the offset.
