Is this Rice?

What do you guys think about getting a body shop to black out the chrome on my black car? I've always hated the chrome, thinking it gave the car a less sporty look.

Can this be done? I'd love to get rid of the chrome around the windows and the door handles and then I'm planning on putting on the body colored grill, 03 headlights and tails later this week. I might even consider having the rear emblems painted to match the metallic black/silver ones that are available for the TL.

I think that would give the car a more menacing look.

Any other opinions?

Well if anyone has photoshop and a picture of a black CL-S, they could paint all the trim black and you could get an idea how it would look.

it is very possible to do this

i suggest u do it yourself

get some black spray paint, open up your headlamps and tape up whatever you dont want to paint and spray away.

ive seen some done by accord owners and it comes out pretty good

gesusHkrist!! DO NOT paint your fukking car with spray paint--you are driving an acura, not a civic. not to mention that it will start to peel in 4-6 months...or your first scrape.

and no, i wouldn't worry about it being 'rice' if acura has started doing it (re: front grill of '03).

so much for driving a luxocoupe.

If you had the parts re-chromed with black chrome or black nickel.......that would be tastefull and bad-azzd!

such minor touch is rice

i tend to define rice as when ppl do things to their cars that is obviously a ham job and makes it look worse and cheaper. i think messing with the chrome is going to look pretty obvious and will definitely cheapen it if someone walking by can tell that something is off.

I did these quickly, sorry for the poor job. I couldn't find any really good pictures of a black CL. I couldn't find a frint view, so I went with a dark blue one (don't know the name of the color. The blue is harder to match then the black. If you like, post a pic of your car and I can try to black the chrome out on yours. I don't particularly care for the rims on the side pic, but I did it just to give you an idea.

Oh yeah!!!

I like that black!!!

One thing I was thinking about doing was priming and using touch up paint with a larger brush to paint the front grill.

The way I figure it if it turns out perfect I can save money on the new grill and if not it's only a few bucks to replace.

What is the "chrome" trim around our car? Is is just coated plastic?

And, do you all think it is possible to have that stuff re-chromed with black chrome?

I'll keep you updated on my progress.

Just a word of caution - that front grille costs $90 and the grille surround, which might be shaped differently for '03 and therefore requires that you get that as well, is another $60. Not exactly just a couple bucks to replace. :-\

You realize in the post you quoted, the guy was talking about doing black headlight housings and not painting the chrome emblems. Making your housings black is not ricey especially since Acura is doing it. I painted mine CL's black and it has held up really well. Why would it peel there is no way it could get scratched like you said so the only thing left to peel it is heat so you use high temp paint.

Well, so far so good.

Here's what I've done.

Disassembled the grill and cleaned the parts well.

Primed the outer and inner grill. I've left the Acura symbol chrome for now.

Then, I painted both pieces with high gloss black paint and they are drying right now. So far they both look really good.

Next, I am going to lightly spray them with rustoleum metallic black paint to give them a slightly metallic look. Then, I'll put them all together and decide on what to do with the A symbol.

Like I said, no big deal if it doesn't work out since I was planning on buying the new grill next week anyways.

I'll keep you informed.

ummm...NO, he said "I'd love to get rid of the chrome around the windows and the door handles and then I'm planning on putting on the body colored grill, 03 headlights and tails later this week. I might even consider having the rear emblems painted". and i don't think it's rice either.

kan't see how paint is gonna stick to chrome very well with do-it-yerself spray paint. a GOOD body shop will correctly prep the metal for paint, and it's not going to look like a sprayed-on hack job.

just 2 more cents.

Just sprayed the very light coat of metallic on the pieces and they look great.

I'll wait for this to dry then do one coat of clearcoat and put em back on.

Out.

Yes, believe me, I have no intentions whatsoever of attempting to paint any permanent pieces of the car!!!

If I look into doing the chrome around the windows I will take it to my friend's shop that is the best around here for bodywork to get their opinions.

Don't worry--I'm not that crazy!!

Also, the paint sticks quite well once the pieces are primer thoroughly.

Ummm...YES You quoted a post that was giving instructions on how to do the '03 headlights NOT the chrome window surrounds. You can def. paint the headlight surrounds to give you the '03 look instead of buying the '03 headlights

2001AudiS4 thanks for hosting that pic. One of these days I'll get a hosting site back up since they killed photopoint.

So, I finished the grill and it looks great. Honestly, for a black car, there is no reason to spend the extra money on the new grill. Just take it off, clean it, prime it and put two coats of gloss black on it. Don't do the metallic paint, it did not match very well.

The gloss black is very nice and shiny and even though it doesn;t have the blue metallic of the paint it looks like it is stock since this piece might not necessarily be a metallic piece, but just a black piece stock.

I left the acura symbol chrome and it gives a nice contrast.

Now that I've done this I might also opt out on the new headlights since this alone gives the front a nice aggressive look to it. The tails, however, will be next on the list this week.

I was thinking about a way to BLACK-OUT the chrome trim around my side windows.
Especially after I get the tint done.

If anyone successfully does this, let me know.

The SEMA CL has this done and no one here would DARE call THAT car rice.

If anyone tries to paint his or her front grill and PHUCKS it up bad.
I just happen to have a brand new CHROME front grill in the box that I would be willing to sell cheap.

JZ I definitely think you should stick with the '01 headlights. I really think that blacked out area on the 03s looks cheezy, especially on a black CLS. I like our shiny headlights.

Also, can you PM me and tell me where you go to get your tires mounted and balanced? I'm thinking about getting those Kumho Ecsta Supras. Seem like a good price at TireRack ($100).

I assume the 225/45s and 235/45s have the proper load rating for our car?

Also, why the 235 over 225? I'd prefer 225 just because I'm gonna be dropped more and I don't want to rub, so is there any problem with the 225?
