it is funny, but how many times have you downshifted in SS and the car lunges when it downshifts. Some times if I need to slow down, I down shift like that since I don't want to brake alot with our puny warped stock rotors. But in all honesty, some people do that, even if it's not rev matching.

^

I do that ALL the time. I go from D5 to D4 and let the revs slow the car down.

in my 99 i downshift from 2nd to 1st and tap the gas when downshifting and the car doesnt tug, it goes right into 1st and slows down. Where as if i downshift from 2nd to 1st without doing that, the car tugs very hard.

I dunno, Mercedes using the term "rev matching" for their 7g automatic-"The optimal rev-matching results in more fuel-efficient, quieter operation. "

That to match the powerband of the engine correctly with all those gears.

What they should do is make him drive at 40mph, have someone with a video camera. Make him go between 1st and second gear seamlessly, back and forth. Without losing/gaining much speed.

I guarantee you'll see the camera man boucing back and forth.

LOL

From what that one guy is saying the car is essentially doing a neutral drop inbetween each shift. If that was the case, if you had the car floored and you shifted early at 4k rpms. The engine would rev up all the way between shifts.

I saw that thread yesterday and thought it was funny. I engine brake often but only at low speeds, 3rd to 2nd at like 1500 rpms or below.

Kind of a silly argument. You can't "rev match" an automatic but you can give it a little gas to make the downshift smoother. Technically not rev matching but it's the closest term to describe it.

That's also the first auto tranny that can skip gears 2 at a time, others have to go through each at a time.

I could have sworn that my auto skipped gears (5th to 3rd under WOT)!
