Removing rear window tint

Is it safe to remove tint off the rear window? Will the heater elements/radio antenna be damaged?

Sure its safe if you have someone who knows what they're doing working on it. If not you can very easily pull your dot matrix and defroster off with the film.

The dot matrix is part of the glass. It's not going anywhere.

I always hear that it's pretty much impossible to remove without destroying the defroster or antenna. Everyone I've know that had it removed ended up with crappy reception and/or parts of the window that won't defrost. I would leave it alone.

Why are you removing it?

If done right, it will be fine. My tint shop covers the whole inside back window with black garbage bags, & leaves it in the sun for a few hours. This heats up the tint, & when they go to remove it it comes right off.
Have also seen tint shops use a heat lamp, or heat gun & heat one area at a time & pull it off.

I had the tint removed from my old TA, and they completely fucked up the defroster.

It is possible to do it without damage. But make sure they know what they're doing, and make sure they know your defroster is working before they do it.

I wanted to retint it lighter, I can't see out very well at night. Plus I think a lighter tint would look better on my anthracite. But I don't want to do it if it'll do damage.

Unless whoever is doing it can guarantee you no damage and that everything will work and function how it did, I would just leave it alone. How dark is your tint in the back?

Funny Chopper, you're right I should keep it so I can't see the spoiler.
I used a reputable tint shop here who have done a good job on 2-3 of my cars. I called them today and they said they can not guarantee no damage will happen.

I'm no spring chicken and things get darker and darker at night. Plus I thought the darker tint helped more with heat and UV damage which is not true. I have the darkest you can have on a car here in TX on the rear and on the 2 back windows.
Mike I'll try to call tomorrow.

I know (per Grayson) ...Just messin around with ya. My Father said the same thing, but why he had his suburban rear 5 windows done at 5% is beside me. I think his girlfriends daughter was bitching about teh sun too much is why had it done. Talk about not able to see anything I would literally have to stick my head outside the window just to back it out of my driveway.

Meh..... I had 5% on my side windows in my TA, you get used to it after a while.

I had 5 on top of 20 on the back, not even the police could shine a light through that window.

Here is another thought Ron.

How about changing to a different "type" of tint.
I had 20% Quantum Metallic tint on my CLS (which blades now has) and have it on my INtegra also.

easy to see out of, but harder for people to see in.

This crossed my mind after reading the last sentence of your previous post.
again, just a thought.

When my tint guy re-did my car, he told me that he would judge how much damage would occur to the back window by how easily the tint came off the side windows.....i.e. if it came off the side windows easily (which it did), then it should come off the back windows no problem. I don't know if you have tint on your side windows but if you do, have thatremoved first and then see what happens.

I don't think you can use the metallic film with Navigation...

I think mine was called 'carbon' tint or something, some new non-metallic type. Removing the side window tint is a great idea to see how stuck it is, I want to lighten those too. The front windows are lighter already.
Chopper your car bumper is fixed!! Dark tint looks good on white, not on anthracite IMO, takes away from the color of the anthracite.

No, "my" car was never wrecked, it's Blades that keeps gettigng arracted to accidents. The CLS pictured is my old one, which he now owns.

True. Lighter colored windows do look good on Anthracite. It was just a thought.

and to those saying that the metallic tint is not a good idea w/Navi, the Navi antenna is on the top of the car, so why would the windows influence anything I never had navi, and correct me if I am out of line, but thought it all was signaled through the Fixed top antenna.

not quite....I have 01 TL and CL both with nav....no antenna on top of car on either...the problem I think is with the GPS sensor in the car....gets jammed up...
