u guys ever look just above the back license plate and see how much of a gap there is from the bumper to the main chasis?? it's pretty big. does that mean anything when it comes to someone rear-ending us, potentially bigtime??

Not really, the rear bumper bracing is part of the unibody system and what will tend to happen is the total collapse of the plastic bumper up to the brace and then thats when the thing that hits you either stops or completly wipes out the brace-twisting and bending the whole body frame. This is bad!!
and the insurance company will usally render it totalled.
If the car lives, I know those new plastic bumpers are not cheap to replace.

I was rearended on the DC beltway in rush-hour traffic. I was going 35 and the guy who hit me was going much faster. The body shop said he hit pretty hard because of the dent he made in the tray where the spare tire lays. However, to look at it, all I had was nast black scrapes on the back bumper, and a mangled license plate (but he did bend my exhaust system). Pohanka's body shop did a pretty good job with it--I can't tell that the bumper skin had been replaced.
