Rear Brakes on 98 3.0CL

I just brought my 98 CL in for it's 30K service and was surprised to hear what the technician told me. He said my back brakes were worn out and needed replacing for $200. I don't drive the car hard and was very surprised to hear this. I would be interested to hear others omments on this. Is this usual?

worn out ? what does he mean by worn out. is the color faded, is the bulb burnt out, tell him what he means by worn out. he could be rippen u off and maken u get a new part. My theory, if it ain't broken and it works, don't fix it. or ask for a 2nd opionion.

Hi, I also have a 3.0 '98 and I got my brake pads changed near 30k too. I can't really remember which was which, but one of the brakes, front or back, are softer than the other. You can tell that your pads are faded by just driving. When you brake sometimes, you will hear a squeeling sound. That is the warning detector of the brakes.

After I take my car in for oil changes and checkups, they always tell me what percentage I have left on my brakes front and rear. Check your last receipt from your last visit, they list out the percentage of your brakes. Good luck..

Oh yeah, I never really wanted to second guess on brakes. I mean I know that the dealer tries to rip us off sometimes, but brakes deal with my passengers life and my life.

brakes really depends on the area you drive, if you drive alot in traffic like around here i have seeen them go as early as 15-20k but i have also seen them last close to 100k. Depends on driver as well. $200 isnt that bad if it includes resurfacing your rotors. around here replacing pads and cutting rotors runs about$250

I seriously don't think it is normal. I had mine done at 22K?! My friends is coming up at 30K as well. I don't drive like a maniac and am easy on the brakes. I really think there is some design flaw here somewhere. The tech told me that it was due to something that acura/honda had changed in the braking. The rears are doing more braking now than the used to. I have owned 2 other Hondas and I had never had to replace the rears before the fronts and especially at this early juncture. I think this is a line of BS but what could I do, I still had to have mine replaced. I am hearing more and more of this poor brakewear. If the pad material has changed it may be the extreme summer heat (AZ, TX), that is causing it to wear prematurely. I sure hope they change something to make them last longer so we don't have to replace pads every 2 yrs.

I had to replace my rear pads at about 36K. They were down to 3/32, and the dealer said that at 2/32 the indicators would start squealing. (The fronts still had like 7/32 on, but I heard Honda uses bigger brake pads on the front than the rear.) My dealer quoted $160 to replace the pads, but I got it done at A &H Motor for about $120.

Like these guys said, it depends on your driving. My car is at approx. 52k mile and I haven't had the brakes done yet. I'm getting all 4 done (pads and rotors cut) for around $300 by my mechanic in about a month. You can tell when your brakes are going, I have to push the pedal further then usual, I just started feeling this, but I don't want to mess around with brakes. I'm a little easier on the brakes b/c I use the tranny to slow me down (shift down to D3), so maybe that's why they lasted so long ?? For $200, get them done, better safe then sorry....
