READ! LONG conversation with a old friend on the Tranny, waterpump (works for Acura)

I did not know that my friend I have talked to is a tech at Acura. I just buzzed him to chat. The exact conversation is posted below now. I changed his real name to acura tech friend to keep him unknown. But everything he is saying is scaring me.

ACURA TECH FRIEND: whos this ?
SpeedyCLS: russmaxmaniac
ACURA TECH FRIEND: U got a CL now ?
SpeedyCLS: duh
SpeedyCLS: lol
SpeedyCLS: have had it for 1 year almost
ACURA TECH FRIEND: oooh man I hope a 6spd !
SpeedyCLS: where u been
SpeedyCLS: nope
ACURA TECH FRIEND: cause I work for Acura !
ACURA TECH FRIEND: and man trannies blow up on them like a
MOFO
ACURA TECH FRIEND: nice car
ACURA TECH FRIEND: but man....
ACURA TECH FRIEND: trannies !!!!
SpeedyCLS: didn't want a manual due to me driving in
sucky traffic every day
SpeedyCLS: yea
ACURA TECH FRIEND: shieet...... 100% fail ratio on the trannies.
SpeedyCLS: so i saw
SpeedyCLS: mine has 8500 now
ACURA TECH FRIEND: have U blown urs up yet ?
SpeedyCLS: tranny has its moments
ACURA TECH FRIEND: give it till 22K miles or so
SpeedyCLS: tranny cooler i put on it, hoping it helps
ACURA TECH FRIEND: what kinda cooler?
SpeedyCLS: if the tranny goes it goes, i got a
warranty. I love the car though
ACURA TECH FRIEND: I mean they got coolant for cooling.
SpeedyCLS: b&m
SpeedyCLS: that coolant isn't cool enough
SpeedyCLS: trust me
SpeedyCLS: hehe
ACURA TECH FRIEND: I know.
ACURA TECH FRIEND: I am a trans expert at acura
ACURA TECH FRIEND: I do 90% of the trannies
ACURA TECH FRIEND: shit I do 2-3 trannies a day
SpeedyCLS: i didn't know u worked at acura
ACURA TECH FRIEND: yeah I worked there for a long time
ACURA TECH FRIEND: don't wanna scare U
ACURA TECH FRIEND: I love the cars too
ACURA TECH FRIEND: but fucking trannies SUCK ASS
SpeedyCLS: i knew about them before i bought the
car
ACURA TECH FRIEND: since 99 they had this problem
ACURA TECH FRIEND: and BRAND new cars have bad trannies
SpeedyCLS: i always thought till recently it was due to
abuse
ACURA TECH FRIEND: I did one with 400 miles !
SpeedyCLS: i know a few who have over 50k on
theres, a guy has 75k on his 99 tl
ACURA TECH FRIEND: I had one on a PDI
ACURA TECH FRIEND: pdi- pre-delivery-inspection.
ACURA TECH FRIEND: car had 12 miles on the odo
ACURA TECH FRIEND: no reverse and slips in 2nd.
ACURA TECH FRIEND: I put 5 trannies into one CL 3.0- 99
model
ACURA TECH FRIEND: tomorrow its getting its 5th one :P
SpeedyCLS: mine has done this since new, 1-2 it
shifts, but it feels like it has a studder or another shift,
the acura guys on the forum said thats just normal
ACURA TECH FRIEND: its not supposed to shutter
ACURA TECH FRIEND: U are not supposed to even feel it shift
SpeedyCLS: today it has just felt completely bad
ACURA TECH FRIEND: U know about the timing belt recal on the
03s ?
ACURA TECH FRIEND: recall*
SpeedyCLS: shifting hard, and shifting down when i
didn't want it
SpeedyCLS: so it might be getting ready to go
ACURA TECH FRIEND: yeah man U need a trans
SpeedyCLS: i heard about the water pump on the 03s
ACURA TECH FRIEND: I have had one that would chirp 2nd
when U floored it at 40MPH :P
SpeedyCLS: of course the dealer won't do anything till
it breaks
SpeedyCLS: lol
SpeedyCLS: oh yea
ACURA TECH FRIEND: no no no... the tranny or pump ?
SpeedyCLS: mine does that all the time
SpeedyCLS: chrips 2nd ifi floor it
SpeedyCLS: forum guys aid its normal too
ACURA TECH FRIEND: U need a tranny man :P
ACURA TECH FRIEND: don't listen to those fuckers dude
ACURA TECH FRIEND: I work on them alllll day long
ACURA TECH FRIEND: there are 700 !!!! law suites against acura
SpeedyCLS: !??!
ACURA TECH FRIEND: for trannies
SpeedyCLS: how?
ACURA TECH FRIEND: cause peoples trannies keep on blowing
ACURA TECH FRIEND: and we get new ones
SpeedyCLS: so peopel are sueing acura?
ACURA TECH FRIEND: and they blow up too
ACURA TECH FRIEND: yeah
ACURA TECH FRIEND: I had 2 trannies in last week that after I
put em in... on the TEST DRIVE they blew up !
ACURA TECH FRIEND: yesterday I got a tranny for one of those
that blew up on my test drive
ACURA TECH FRIEND: and guess what... it was fucked up too !
SpeedyCLS: lol
ACURA TECH FRIEND: one of the sensors was bad so I just
swapped it.
SpeedyCLS: u see that latimes artcile on it?
ACURA TECH FRIEND: no I didnt
SpeedyCLS: hehe
SpeedyCLS: let me find it
ACURA TECH FRIEND: but I am almost sure there will be some
sort of a recall soon on them things
ACURA TECH FRIEND: don't get me wrong I love putting em in :P
ACURA TECH FRIEND: fucking takes me 2 hours to R&R one.
SpeedyCLS:
http://www.latimes.com/classified/automotive/highway1
/la-hy-acura11sep11.story?coll=la%2Dclass%2Dautos
%2Dhighway1
SpeedyCLS: yeah when is honda ever gonna do a
recall?!
SpeedyCLS: never
SpeedyCLS: lol
ACURA TECH FRIEND: I must have done like 50 trannies in the
last 2 months.
ACURA TECH FRIEND: well... the Accord never had this problem
ACURA TECH FRIEND: cause they use a 4spd tranny
ACURA TECH FRIEND: but they still fail
ACURA TECH FRIEND: not as much
ACURA TECH FRIEND: but they do
ACURA TECH FRIEND: probably 50% fail ratio on those
ACURA TECH FRIEND: compared to 100+% on the TL/CL
SpeedyCLS: i heard the mdx and ody are having
problems too
ACURA TECH FRIEND: well no
ACURA TECH FRIEND: MDX is ok
ACURA TECH FRIEND: we only had one so far
ACURA TECH FRIEND: and I seen some with 50K miles on them
still fine
ACURA TECH FRIEND: the tranny is little diff.
ACURA TECH FRIEND: RSX has problems too
ACURA TECH FRIEND: I did one trans so far.
ACURA TECH FRIEND: car had like 18K miles
ACURA TECH FRIEND: its new so it will not have the problems
yet
SpeedyCLS: what is the problem with the trannys?
SpeedyCLS: i mean what is causing them to go out?!
ACURA TECH FRIEND: 3rd clutch pack goes out
SpeedyCLS: why the 3rd?!
SpeedyCLS: people are having the tranny actually lock
up on them like that article which does scare me, and
might loose control
SpeedyCLS: ?
ACURA TECH FRIEND: I never seen one
ACURA TECH FRIEND: just read the thing
ACURA TECH FRIEND: yeah 3rd clutch pack is responsible for
forward movement
SpeedyCLS: have u actually opened it up to verifyt
this?
ACURA TECH FRIEND: no Acura won't let US rebuild trannies
ACURA TECH FRIEND: sometimes the trannies we get from them
are in worst condition than the old one in the car
ACURA TECH FRIEND: sometimes they look like new
ACURA TECH FRIEND: just look wise
ACURA TECH FRIEND: most of the time they shift jerky or slip
like a mofo
ACURA TECH FRIEND: some don't have reverse eighter
SpeedyCLS: either
SpeedyCLS: doh
ACURA TECH FRIEND: dude when I come to parts... they
know...tranns :P
ACURA TECH FRIEND: well Ive had like 10 of em where there
was no reverse
ACURA TECH FRIEND: just not there at all
ACURA TECH FRIEND: feels like its in neutral
SpeedyCLS: put my name on your buddy list dude,
and keep me updated on this shit.
ACURA TECH FRIEND: coo man
SpeedyCLS: this is nuts
ACURA TECH FRIEND: but like I'm telling U the trannies suck
SpeedyCLS: yea
SpeedyCLS: the car is nice
SpeedyCLS: the tranny sucks
ACURA TECH FRIEND: my back hurts from doing em all day long
SpeedyCLS: and i am stuck in this car too
ACURA TECH FRIEND: radios suck too
SpeedyCLS: nah, i think they are good
ACURA TECH FRIEND: they jam up CDs...alot !
SpeedyCLS: oh?
SpeedyCLS: i use the cd alot
SpeedyCLS: no prob
ACURA TECH FRIEND: OPDS sensor goes bad ALOT on them
too
ACURA TECH FRIEND: its for Ocupant Pasenger Detection
Sensor
SpeedyCLS: never heard of it
ACURA TECH FRIEND: yeah I do... there are things that Honda
has and no one knows about it
ACURA TECH FRIEND: MDX - steering racks
ACURA TECH FRIEND: RSX- rods through the block
ACURA TECH FRIEND: TL/CL engines and trannies
SpeedyCLS: engine problems too?
ACURA TECH FRIEND: ooo yeah
ACURA TECH FRIEND: timing belts snapping on the new models
ACURA TECH FRIEND: the 03 model
ACURA TECH FRIEND: or head gaskets !!!!
SpeedyCLS: but no bulletin or recall i seen yet on it
ACURA TECH FRIEND: the water pump replacement...
ACURA TECH FRIEND: why do U think they got it ?
ACURA TECH FRIEND: water pump is no the cause
SpeedyCLS: thats for the water pump
ACURA TECH FRIEND: the tensioner bolts up to the water pump
housing
ACURA TECH FRIEND: and the bolt breaks off on the housing
ACURA TECH FRIEND: causing the belt to break off !!!
ACURA TECH FRIEND: thats why they got a recall
SpeedyCLS: water pump isn't attached to the timing
belt though
ACURA TECH FRIEND: yeah but its spun by it !
ACURA TECH FRIEND: just like the old VG30 in the Maximas
ACURA TECH FRIEND: what I'm saying.. is
ACURA TECH FRIEND: the pump bolts up to the block
ACURA TECH FRIEND: but the TENSIONER for the belt
ACURA TECH FRIEND: its on the water pump
ACURA TECH FRIEND: and the bolt sheers off
ACURA TECH FRIEND: and belt goes...
SpeedyCLS: ah
ACURA TECH FRIEND: engine- STALLS- as Acura likes to put it
SpeedyCLS: so i guess they changed the water pump
on the 03
SpeedyCLS: lol
ACURA TECH FRIEND: no engine is repleaced.
ACURA TECH FRIEND: no they had a bad batch of water pumps
thats all
ACURA TECH FRIEND: will have a #9 on the water pump
ACURA TECH FRIEND: people bring it in for inspection
ACURA TECH FRIEND: takes like half hour to do
SpeedyCLS: well at least my engine will be fine
SpeedyCLS: hehe
ACURA TECH FRIEND: take the covers off the timing belt..and
then check the casting # on theWater pump is 9- u
repleace the belt, and pump.
SpeedyCLS: hey man, its late here, so i am gonna jet,
thanks for the info and keep me updated

Meh, he sounds a little hyperactive.

My tech friend said the timing belt problem is that one of the bolts on a tensioner is too close to the belt and can come in contact with the belt causing it to wear and break. That's all. Not all that other stuff he's claiming.

And what the hell is "100+%" failure rate?

But still, yeah, the trannies are a bunch of shit.

Umm, if the tensioner bolt breaks the belt pops off, and bam there goes your engine.

DUH! He knows what he is talking about, I have known him for 3 years. He built up motors on Nissans. That is just the way he talks.

And Crown Acura here in Clearwater, FL tried to tell me that hardly any Trannys had been replaced (which I of course already knew was false). They also gave me a hard time about the CD Player when I first got the car. 2nd day I owned the car it jammed up with 7 of my CDs. I bought the car in May of 01. I just got re-imbursed finally a month ago. After that one went, the same day they replaced it the replacement jammed up with 2 cds in the deck. Had to replace that one too. The more and more I hear stuff like this is going to make me think twice when my lease is up. I love the car, but when Acura KNOWS there are blatant problems, and then when we bring the cars to the dealer to get repaired they try to blame it on us and give us (at least in my case) a hard time to fix it, its absolutely rediculous. It's not like we all bough Geo's. We driving Acura's for god's sake. Supposed to be a top of the line car that comes with top of the line service. I've yet to see either.

No no what I was saying is that the problem is not the bolt breaking off, it's that the bolt is coming in contact with the belt, causing the belt to tear and break. He might have said it wrong. Either that or my master tech friend who's replaced several already under the recall doesn't know what he's talking about.

Seems like a legit source, except for the "100+% failure rate"
a wee bit exaggerated

The 99-01 TL's 4speed, I've been told has the most suspect Tranny. My cousin's '99 locked up on a major freeway and spun out doing a 360 coming to a complete stop facing the opposite direction of traffic . Luckily no one was hurt.

Also, theres several lengthy bulletins out for the '99-01 CLs for quite some time.

Anyways, I give kudos to this guy for having the balls to speak up like this. And it's good that you chose to keep his identity anonymous.

My take on what he was trying to say was that he "thinks" all trannies will eventually fail and the reason for putting a "+" after it was to say that the same car may have more than one tranny failure. Just my take on it. That may or may not be what he was trying to say.

No offense but the guy doesn't sound ll that credible.

Especially when he says 100% failure rate. Even a 5% failure rate would be ridiculously high and unacceptable.

I wonder if there is a government body that actually tracks this stuff or is left up to Honda/Acura to measure and report it?

I don't know what to believe... 1% or 100%. It really doesn't matter to me anymore. It's in my head that mine is gonna go... And it's not the greatest feeling in the world when you're driving on the highway at 80mph!!!

When I spoke to an Acura tech that drove me back to work, here in Atlanta, he was telling me the EXACT same thing. The 5 speed CL/TL auto trannies are failing like mofo's and the 4 speed ones are not as bad. The thing is, we were just shooting the shit about Cl's and he brought that up about the trannies failing all the time. So what this guy is saying is the exact same thing I heard from a different Acura tech guy. So, make your own conclusions.

Got mine from Crown too... had pretty good luck with them, now I'm dealing with Fountain in Orlando, they actually acknowledged the tranny issue, but still advised me to not change tranny fluid until 30K...

I'm pushing 30K now and (knock on wood) having no problems whatsoever... I did have one cd stick on the eject, but I think that was because it was a cd I burned myself and stuck a label on... now I just burn them and not use a label.. no other problems with the cd...

I have started to notice something loose in the driver door, and the continual sun roof noise, but figured I would address at the 30K..

I know my car is affected in the waterpump/timing belt recall, but I still haven't received my official recall notice in the mail yet. If it doesn't come, I'll address it at my first oil change at around 3000-3500 miles...I've only got 1300 miles on the car now.

I'm just thinking, if that timing belt snaps, is the engine designed that there won't be much damage to the engine? I've had 2 belts break on me in the past and the car just stopped driving, but the engine was okay. But I've heard that a broken timing belt could potentially get caught onto other parts of the engine and really screw it up.

He's also, in a roundabout way, saying the same thing EricL, or my tech, or the article in the LATimes said - that they're failing and they're all going to fail because they're defective.
However he has given different claims as to what is wrong with them. Overheating, 3rd gear clutch pack, bearing the wears too quickly. There are lots of theories out as to what is failing, but the LATimes got a quote from someone at Acura that it's the 3rd gear clutch pack failing, so I would put my weight with that reasoning, but I would add that it might be partially due to improper cooling.

And yes, I believe all or almost all of the stock trannies will fail, but I can't believe that replacement ones would fail as well, unless they were just improperly rebuilt or improperly installed, which is exactly what my tech said - the new ones are fixed, so unless built improperly or installed improperly, they should be fine.

Yeah I mean I guess the service could've been worse, I just wasn't pleased with the way it was handled. Especially with the Tranny. I am only 22, and they didn't want to give me an Acura loaner because they said Acura Corp. doesn't like them giving out loaners on Tranny repairs cause it takes so long. So they rented me a car and wanted ME to pay the underage fee ($10 per day) on the rental until my car was fixed. I spent a whole day argueing with them about it before they finally gave me a car for free. How rediculous is that. And better yet, it was a Hyundai and it died the day I brought it back to the dealer to pick up my car. POS. And to top it off, the Tranny in my car went the first day of my week vacation. So I was stuck drivin the Hyundai around all week to Orlando and shit. Pain in the ass. Left a real bad taste in my mouth about how they treat their customers. And the BS about not wanting to give me an Acura loaner is exactly that, BS. TypeR had his done and they gave him an Acura no problem, no questions asked. Same now with his Motor Swap, he's got an Acura and it's definitely been longer than what I would've had it for to get my tranny replaced.

I dont think the "100+%" failure rate is unreasonable. We all know that ALL of our transmissions are faulty. The only thing that is making them not fail is that perhaps they are not being driven hard enough. Or long enough. And some peolpe have had 5 transmissions go out in a row! That would be a 500% failure for that dude

Shawn,

Wow, that does suck... I can't believe that they wouldn't give you anything to drive. Heck, I brought mine in for the normal, new car things they need to fix, and if they couldn't do it right then and there, they always gave me something to drive, and it certainly wasn't a Hyundai...WTF???? I've had the same treatment at another Ack dealer I went to in VA... hard to believe... sorry about that! I don't believe I would have been as nice as you had they done that to me... and certainly letters to King Ack and others would have been written. Dayuuum, I hope mine doesn't go...

Yeah pretty shitty. I started to write a letter but haven't finished it and sent it to them yet. It's not like I'm some spoiled 16 year old kid driving the car and I can have my parents drive me places and stuff (which is probably how they felt). I am able to drive my nice car cause I bust my ass at work and make a decent living. They always seem to treat me different and I know it's cause of my age. Of course when you buy the car their attitude is completely the opposite. They shouldn't sell their cars to people under 25 if they can't afford to provide them with the same treatment, either that or give everyone under 25 a discount on the car or something. Just complete BS. I would expected to be treated like that by a Hyundai dealer, or Geo, but not Acura. Now that I'm all fired up about this again I think i'm going to finish and send that letter. I have been holding back because that day I had to call Acura Corp. to get Crown to give me a car and they didn't seem to care either, stating that "it's the dealers discretion how they handle loaners". Acura doesn't mandate the dealers to provide any type of loaner for any reason I was told. BS

Hi everyone! I'm new to the board, but my girlfriend is seriously considering getting a 2003 CL-S with the automatic tranny in the very near future. This thread was the first I heard of the tranny failures. Is the problem serious enough that she shouldn't get the car?

We test drove it recently, and she fell in love with it. Any information will help.

Thanks !

As far as I know there aren't any big problems with them, but who knows. A lot of the 01 tranny's didn't start failing until over 20k miles, so we might not know for a few more months if there is a problem with them or not. I would still get the car if she likes it. It is a great car besides the tranny issue, and the tranny will be replaced if it goes.

Good idea! Don't think she's gonna like that much, though (it'll be her daily driver).

there's an entire section of this forum devoted to tranny issues. Had I known about it I would not purchase this car (period).

I can just see a situation where I'm driving down the road and the tranny busts making me lose control of the car. I don't know about you, but I don't want to lose control of a car at 65mph.

It's amazing how fast rumors start to spread. This is evident espeically when the same set of facts and figures are repeated over and over by separate groups while the same facts and figures go completely unknown to other groups. It's the telltale signs of the rumor mill in full force.

I think I read San Antonio as the location of this Acura guy. I grew up in San Antonio and my family has been there for decades. I can tell you that it is impossible to fix that many CL trannies in a day (for months) because there are not that many Acuras in that city. My brother is a car buff and I bought my car in March 2001 and when I went home in December 2001, he had never even seen a CL-S on the road. So Acura man is stretching the truth a bit. Someone who lives in SA, just stop by the dealership and see how many CLs are towed in. Whatever. I've been back there and there are no CLs in that cow town.

Guys I am serious. I am not saying that he didn't say what he said, cause he said it, he did. I'm just saying understand what he is saying, think about it, then you decide. If you are reasonable, you'll quickly realize that he not be so forthcoming. Oh and btw, I don't work for Honda or Acura. But I do realize that sometime the employees who do work for there think that they are the experts on what is going on and therefore feel that they can speak on behalf of the Company. For everyone of those, there's another who will say the opposite. Especially when you get a little bit of info, you fill in the gaps. Fill in the gaps long enough and often enough, over the months it becomes the truth.

Again, I'm not going to try to explain or refute the tranny issue (I do believe there is one) but I'm not going to let this guy scare me too much. Already my friend, BD-1, who just bought his 03 TLS read this and now he's pissed. This is silly. It is even affecting me, as rational thinking as I am. I hear it so much that after 62,000 miles on my 01 CL-S, now I'm starting to wonder if I have tranny issues.....

I live in San Antonio, but the guy lives on the West coast, exact location I am not positive but I can find out later. LOL, yeah they are not many CL-S but they are alot of TLs and TL-Ss around town.

Your friend should be pissed like I am as well. Again this guy does not work at a dealer in San Antonio. I do know Gunn Acura in s.a. has had to replace many trannys as well since I have talked to them.

yeah, i rember you've complained recently... Is it getting worse, is it really a problem or a normal behaivor?
you have Acura extended warranty?
man, if your tranny fails it wil be the end to all of my confidence in Acura. ( It's pretty low now, but soon I will have zero )
I am surprised that it's still not in the news if the problem that big.... maybe its not that big and its really 1.6%?
Well... this number could easily be manipulated, and we don't know what is wait at 90K, 100K, and 150K miles

I work my tranny pretty hard. I'm always flooring it and I SS quite a bit. I always thought the ocassional shutter was ok for a car over 50k. I might have been feeling something before then, but for months, nothing has changed; it hasn't gotten worse for over 20k miles.

My friend knew about the potential tranny issues and he bought anyway. Then when he read this post (I guess there is a similar on on ATL), that's when he got pissed. He asked me about mine several months ago and when I said mine was ok, he did point out that my steering wheel vibrates sometimes when the car is idle at a stop light. I don't know. I have to go back and read some of the post regarding the symptoms; the very posts that I overlooked because I was a non-believer. But since my warranty quits at 100k (extended by my insurer GEICO), I want to make sure I can take care of whatever this is right now. I WILL admit that no one wants to be inconvenienced or have to pay for some, me included.

But I will not get all worried about something that might or might not happen because it happened to somebody else. So for everyone who is cancelling their roadtrips because they fear getting stuck on the road away from home, for everyone who leaves their car in the garage and takes the wife's car because they don't want to do a 360 on the freeway, for everyone who's afraid the drive; I drove to Texas, Minnesota, Chicago, St Louis, New York, Colorado, all over. I drive high and low, near and far. And I never worried about it and I enjoyed it. I go 90 mph nearly every day and near 140mph on my last trip. I go up and down and in the Colorado mountains and I joyride and race all over creation (used to), my friends and s/o's in my car, always on the cellpohone, watching dvds and music videos and I don't worry one bit. And I love it and you will too if you just do it and put it out of your mind that you car might break at any moment. If you are truly worried about this, you might want to consider getting out of your car, I know if I lost such confidence in the safety of my vehicle, I would abandon it at all costs. Remember you don't have any damages until something happens, and that just doesn't mean an accident, but if you had to take a loss (sell it), you have cause. Give it a shot.

keensteel, I agree, time to start enjoying our cars instead of constantly worrying.... The problem is well bellow 2-3%... And if tranny fails, I am sure by that time Acura will come up with a new replacement tranny ( They said they already did, so now its only a matter of time till it goes to production )

Jesus, please make this stop O.K. don't drive your car, stay out of tall buildings, don't eat fatty foods, and especially don't park your Acura CL-S next to a potentially explosive BMW, don't they all explode ?
