Radars ...

Anybody got an idea about a very good radar?
Perhaps some links where to buy them?

Thanks!

Prikid,

Just recently evaluated most of the pluggable detectors on the market. Hadn't driven with a detector since college. A detector is definitely necessary. The CL-S begs for a ticket in terms of both looks and acceleration.

Suggestions-

BEL Vector - This is widely available and highly rated. Picked mine up at Circuit City. Great Ka sensitivity, few false alarms, effective night time mode, and digital voice warning system have been the highlights so far.

Valentine 1 - Also highly rated, although most of the reviews I have read indicate that the Escort Passport 8500 outclasses the V1 in recent testing.

Escort Passport 8500 - Another highly rated detector.

In my case, I wasn't in the mood to wait around for mail order, so I went with the BEL. Might be worth your while to take a good hard look at the Escort. The V1 could get interesting if you're into directional indicators, although from where I'm sitting Ka sensitivity and good anti-falsing circuitry are more important.

My vote is V1!!

With talk of air vascar, we need to find some police radio frequencies.

I don't think monitoring the radio frequencies is worth it to combat the aircraft. The few times that you actually encounter aircraft makes gearing up and financing against aircraft vascar impractical. What do you do when you go into another state?

The best defense against aircraft is not to speed and the next best defense is learning how to reverse a [received] ticket. Proactively fighting the airplane is futile.

I have heard that the K40 in car install is one of the best. If your looking for a portable detector, go for a valentine 1. I think Passport series detectors give you a guarantee that if you get caught speeding they will actually give you money for the ticket. Too bad they can't clear that from your driving record too =). No speeding tickets for me for the last 2 years (knock on wood).

I think I'm probably one of the only board members that own a Passport 8500 and V1. I still have some emotional ties to the P8500.. Although I would say that I trust the V1 a lot more. I don't plan on returning or selling the P8500 cuz they said they can upgrade it.. The V1 can be upgraded as well so I'll keep that too..
...By the way, adding extras to a detector like voice and stuff degrades the quality.. That's what the Escort engineers told me at least. Sounds like a great feature, but it doesn't make the detector great.

I have a 15 year romance with Escorts until my divorced this past December. Never gonna look back. I remarried the V1 (the 8500 is the evil twin) last month. V1 is much nicer, I'm happy.

I had them both (V1 and 8500). It's like owning two suits. Once is nice and expensive and you always look good in it when you wear it all the time, the other always hang in the closet (the cheap suit) collecting dust, out of style, radar detector wanna-be.

I've had my Valentine 1 and love it! I've had quite a few others before that (one was a front-mounted Cobra), and none of them compare to V1. The direction indicator is acutally quite useful. No tickets in three years (except one for a stop sign).

Kensteele,
let me narrow it down for you. the frequency from the cops handheld radio to the base unit in his car. i use to have nc's hp. these frequencies are short range and can only be picked up, i quess, within a mile. and if you go out of state, program some more frequencies.

Everyone has their methods, and i am sure you will agree the radar detectors alone will not do these days.

yes, the best method is not to speed, and i don't speed that much. too many people on the road during my drive time.

Peace and happy motoring, kensteele.

I found a GREAT SITE!
Go to www.speedzones.com
They tested the top 4 detectors, and the Passport 8500 WON overall with 97 pts out of 100! The V1 only received 77 pts!
The Passport 8500 received the Ka signal some 3,200 ft before the V1, has more features, less falses, and is $100 bucks cheaper.
Check out the site!

Dude... that site was the deciding factor for my getting a P8500 before getting my V1.. After a 1 month trial with the P8500 I bought a V1 and for 3 1/2 week trial with the V1 I didn't see any major range differences. The V1 actually had a little bit longer range on K bands then the P8500. I was told by the V1 techs that the guy that wrote that article works for Escort. The reason why he bashes V1 is because he was turned down to work for them. So overall, P8500 works great and I still have it, but I'm using the V1 now cuz of the Rear detection, arrows, and bogie counts.. The P8500 literally has no rear detection.. When a cop passes me by the radar stops going off. The V1, on the other hand, continues to track it with the arrow indicator too. But I think it might be because the P8500 knows that it is less likely to get beamed from behind so it doesn't use a lotta resources on rear detection. But then again ya never know.. So go with the V1 if you do a lot of traveling. If you plan on staying in the city, get a P8500, less headache on picking up everything out there..

The P8500 cannot change the laws of physics. Therefore, the reason why it does not detect as well to the rear is because it isn't as sensitive, plain and simple. Does it even have a rear-facing sensor?

The old, old V1 use to shut off right as soon as I passed the cop, the new V1 doesn't, just as you say.

Yes. Anything you do to your windsield and back window will affect your Radar Detector, Lazer Detector will suffer greatly.

Even the dark shade on your OEM windshield will reduce the effectiveness of your radar detector, this is why I do not place mine under the visor but rather below the rear view mirror.

I have 35% metallic chrome tints and I have not noticed any major difference after having them put on... Sensitivity is still there.. Nothing significant that will cause it to miss a radar entirely.. I personally think that getting tints doesn't hurt your unit at all. Theoretically it does, but in practicality you don't perceive the difference.. It's all about fine tuning to that source.. The range is not affected that much if not at all in my point of view.. I can attest to this because I calculate how long it takes for a radar source to reach me once the V1 detects it and how far the V1 tracks it after it passes me.. This is important because my tints are in the rear shield and not the front windshield. Nevertheless, it tracks the source for about the same distance once it's gotten behind me. I am not sacrificing any range with my tints when I use the V1. So don't let that discourage you.. The important thing is that you still have the same reaction time to slow your car down and the detector will not miss any radar entirely.

I won’t begin to discuss all the inaccuracies in THAT review.
It has been posted here and other sites that the review in that link was posted by a disgruntled employee or something like that.

Do a search on this Forum and other auto enthusiast sites and you will have enough “real-world” data from many V1 owners like myself.

If you decide against the V1 based on one biased review, it will be your loss.
