Which radar detector to buy?????
Getting a new detector. help me decide on passport 8500, V1 or Bel 985. If anyone has any other suggestions, please explain. Is there anything out there that detects radar and laser for under 450.

8500 for me.
IT works fine, and has never failed me. So why would I spend more?
If I drove a serious speed machine, sure I'd have a V1.
But we drive acura's! We can only go so fast.

I just have a Bel cordless radar detector. I can take it out if I get a rental or take it to a friends car. It was around $120 but you do need to buy 2AA batteries once in a while. I have been suprised that it isn't very often...every 3 months or so. It has paid for iteself at least once or twice by saving my @ss. But...as many will attest to, with instant on radar...your detector will just serve as notice that you were just clocked.

blackmagic, the cool thing about instant on is that alot of the time they'll hit a car in front of you first and you'll have a chance to catch it. But zap you first and you are right, you are fucked

Honestly, I think your best bet would be to to get laser counter measures. I have a V1, but I get hit with laser all the time now. I think Radar is going to be out dated soon.

Laser lets the cops pick and choose but radar is easier to use, especially with the wireless remotes. They sit back and wait for the next fish. Instant BLAM!
But investing in a laser jammer is worth your while.

I've got the Bel 980 and if a cop has his radar on i have no trouble picking them up ... i really dont know why all the v1 guys are so hard on all the other detectors since it didnt blow all the others out of the water when they were all tested ... i think the reason why the v1 guys are so hardcore about their detector is because they spent $400 on it ... http://www.radartest.com/article.asp?articleID=1064

Besides, like I said, it's a small investemt to avoid tickets and insurance costs... more so to some depending where you live. In CT, it's worth it.
I've save thousands and thousands of dollars from all the saves these devices afford me. No speeding tickets since 94', the first year I got my V1.
BTW typeskid, nice retort.

Top 5 reasons why laser cannot replace radar anytime soon in the near future and I won't get into the money issues:
1.Laser cannot be used in a moving mode. There are lots of department that equip every one of their police cars with traffic radar and since the police is suppose to "patrol", they need equipment that will allow them to move freely. So how do you aim the laser gun while driving 65mph on the freeway? Besides in most instances it is dangerous to park your police car and clock speeding cars especially at night.
2.Laser has a few limitations making is unsuitable for heavy police work. Only recently can laser be used at night, yes that helps, but I think you still need to use the laser gun outside the police car i.e. not thru the glass/windshield. Good luck using radar in at least 20 states during 3 winter months.
3.I don't think laser has received judicial notice. In other words, I don't believe the court has determined that you cannot challenge the principles on which the use of LIDAR are founded. Not so for radar. If you go to court and challenge the principles behind using radar for clocking speeding, you will lose because radar has "judicial notice".
4.Somebody help me on this one but while laser will work in fog and rain, exactly how does the police get a visual on a vehicle in the thick fog? I know same goes for radar but radar is a tracking device and is better equipped to logging history unlike the one time shot (or multiple single shots) of laser. Police can clock a car that it can't see approaching in the fog and when he sees you, you're caught. You can't fire a laser into the abyss.
5.Finally laser can be jammed easier than radar IMO. If the police shift their arsenal over to laser without accompanying laws curtailing the use of laser jammers, the market will shift in favour of the consumer real fast.

How many of you v1 guys can say that?? It may be a better detector by like a hair but I think all the detectors in that class do just as good! They all detect the threat soon enough to slow down … another plus over the v1 is my detector doesnt go off at every little device that sends out a signal … it really does filter almost everything out besides cops … When I was looking into a detector I wanted the v1 but being 18 and a full time student money was an issue so I went with the best bang for the buck and I must say I’m glad I went with the $125 bel over the $400 v1

I've also heard from a neighbor who asked me why I paid so much for my car when in fact I could go to and from work just like him in his $2,000 1991 Integra.

Well here is another issue regarding the V1. The V1 has a rear detector which give the V1 the best range. Now how effective will this rear detector be if your rear windshield is tinted with metallic tint. So with all the guys with V1 out there and who have metallic tint on their cars, is the V1 still as effective as it might be in a car that does not have a metallic tint. Thanks for the info all.

i have a bel 985 and it works really well, i paid 220 for it online. If i do replace my radar i'll get a v1. Mostly because of all the stories, for all of you people i have a couple things i'd like to say.
for an unbiased detection site www.speedzones.com
and by the way, they do have new laser detection that can be mounted in moving vehicles, it is just really expensive so i doubt that so many cops will be switching to radar, especially in big cities with alot of police cars.
