Racing Weight

I was thinking about racing and I if you take the tire and everything else out of your trunk you should go a tiny bit faster. But I was also wondering since we have such a crappy weight distribution wouldn't it help more to have weight in the back to even out the distribution. Right now I have about an extra 100-200 lbs in the back from my amp and sub box and stuff. Would it help any since it should change the weight distribution by at least 1% or maybe more?

Well it will help in overall weight issues, but it will not really help even the weight distribution problem unless you have a stiffer suspension. The CL-S has some mean squat on a hard launch so the transfer of weight from front to back is good to kill about .10 on the 1/4.......... If you beef up the suspension especially the rear for track use then it will make a more significant impact in term of your rear weight..........

When you say "racing," do you mean drag racing -- i.e. just straightline runs? If so, then taking weight out of the back would help your runs by that small percentage, I would think. Furthermore, if you're considering "racing" w/ some mid-speed cornering, your ability to negotiate those turns will not be any better having replaced the empty trunk w/ the spare and the sub. The intrinsic fallacy of the CL-S/TL-S is the front-wheel drive and the stock Michelins. Just a thought, I'm sure others will disagree.

If you are wanting to drag race the car, take the weight out of the trunk. Being that the CL is FWD, having more weight back there is only harmful. If the CL were RWD it may not be as bad.

Weight distibution is one thing, total weight is another. You want the car as light as possible with as close to a 50/50 weight distribution as you can get. Although, adding weight to the rear to get closer to a 50/50 is bad, because it increases the overall weight of the car.

Here's a test you can do yourself: put 300 pounds of weights in your trunk to get the car closer to a 50/50 then drive down a winding road fast. Tell me if the car handles better or worse, and tell me if it brakes better or worse.

If you want the back end heavier to get closer to a 50/50, you must remove weight from the front end, period.

There is more to all of this than 50-50 weight front-to-rear.

It has to do with polar moment of inertia.

Think....

Why do cars with the min-engine cars handle so well, and quick (Like Shelby Cobras (289s), Boxsters, Dino Ferraris [and others])...

If someone wants to see how the car's dynamics change, just drive a road with a full tank of gas, then with it near empty. 17 gallons of gas weighs about 100 lbs.
