Raced a wacko on 90 last night @ midnight...
This guy had to be crazy. He was driving a Lincoln LS and kept on tailgating me (I was doing about 80mph) on 90 and this guy still kept coming on. I switched to the right lane (middle lane) and he switched behind me, still tailgating. I was like "WTF?". Then I thought I would give this guy a run for his money and also test out my 'nifty' (yes, that word still exists) new Valentine 1. So I drop shift and floor it. It was kinda funny to see that car try so hard to keep up. At about 105 or so, he still kept tailing, so I floored once again, soon shifted to 5th and on an open road doing 140mph with this guy about 6 car lengths behind and still coming strong after I cooled down to about 135mph. Well, after that, I took 5th all the way out to 154mph or so and saw this guy turning out to be a little speck very fast. Good thing my exit was coming up so I got a chance to cool down the car a bit. Why was I going 154? ummm...I was cooling down my brakes?!?!

OK - I want to get this straight. You're a dyed in the wool BMW guy and clearly understand automotive engineering, handling dynamics, and respect for a cars limits. You egg on a moron in an under-capable car to get up to speeds over 100MPH on a public highway on a holiday when lots of families are out. Doesn't strike me as too bright dude. You and I both know you could have dusted this guy. The responsible thing to have done was to slow down and just let him go. How would you have felt if your responding caused this guy to total his car and take out a mini-van full of kids in the process? I had a C36 and used to get tailed and toyed with by drivers of lesser cars that I know I could have creamed. I just let it go. Knowing I had the superior car was satisfaction enough.

Not to mention without conscience also. Dude - if you want to kill yourself have at it. If Tom raced this guy in a non-trafficked area I wouldn't have posted. Both he and the other guy knew what they were doing and therefore are responsible for the personal consequences. It's when you involve other people that it becomes wrong. I'm sure you read about the innocent guy killed up here in his super-safe Volvo S80 that was hit head on by a racing Lamborghini driver that was also killed. The guy in the Vette he was racing will do some serious jail time for vehicular manslaughter. If he has any conscience it should also haunt him for life once he gets out of jail. Shouldn't have to happen dude. Take it to a track, warehouse district, or some other desolate area - not an expressway where the conditions are so unpredictable.

all your points are very strong barry, but you can't take the racer out of the man...it's an instinct....and there is danger all around it..it's what feeds it

I understand where your coming from, however....I forgot to state in the story that the expressway was wideeeeee open...hardly a few cars all the way in the right lane during the 4-5 mile joy ride. Even if I did slow down, which I did and I even moved into the right lane to let him pass, he still tailed me by switching over. WTF?

I am finding I no longer do the 145mph races, I backed down from one the other day. It's just too fast in a car on a public road. If I was to wipe out chances of me hitting another car are too high. I have seen a car wipe out around 120ish and after crossing 5 lanes of traffic, bouncing over the divider and sliding upside down into oncoming traffic you get to see what happens when your 3500 pound car needs to go from 120 to 0. I am not saying that M3Sins was right or wrong cuz I still race cars but that did sound a little much on a holiday. Where did I see that accident? Well when I was involved in a course called Heavy Rescue, they showed us a police video of a Cadillac crashing at 125mph. You won't see it on FOX or other channels or specials cuz you see the body half-way eject out of the car when it flipped over and get smeared against the ground and the car for a 1/4 mile till it slowed to a stop.
