Raced a Grand National
I am sure you already know the result... I won!! (YEAH RIGHT)
Lined up at a red light 3 way, next to a regular TL on the left, me in the middle, and a GN on my right. Off the line, I was a little ahead of the TL, pretty far ahead of the GN (they suck directly off the line), but then I heard the wicked hiss... End of story. He basically embarrassed me.
I knew I really had no chance, but I really do love those cars and I am glad I can finally say I got to race against one.
He definitely had some mods because he almost lifted both his rear tires off the road when the turbo kicked in.. amazing...
BTW, I have headers, and he still made me look like I was standing still....

I had the GN for over 3yrs and dumped big bux. It wasn't the most practical vehicle for hauling ppl around, especially when you're Chinese and have to drive your parents to C-town from time to time, but I don't mind.
I never ran it on the track, but raced a few blown 5.0s on the street and won.
It was a great car...but I love my TLS a lot better!

Yeah they had a tuner from indy car come in and tune the car since it was going to be the last production year. Biggest improvement was the addition of a ceramic turbo and better intercooler. That car is BAD ASS. I'd love to get my hands on one.

When the ended the run of the GN's, GM wanted to produce something to take its place. The GN team worked with the guys who designed the Cyclone and Typhoon. It has a lot of the same technology from what I have heard and I believe a lot of the same parts under the hood. All three of those are sweet. Most people SEVERELY underestimate what Grand Nationals can do.

I always LOVED the GN. My first car was a 1987 Olds Cutlass 442 (had the HO 5.0 engine from the Monte SS in it). I always loved those mid 80's RWD American cars. The 442 went until a few years ago when I sold it for the Maxima.
I knew I had no chance.. I did it more as a reason to see one take off. Very impressive. I almost bought a 86 T-type before my CL, but I am glad with my choice.

The Syclone was developed by a company called PAS, which is the same ppl who delveloped the 89' Turbo T/A Indy Pace car. Yes, the engines did share similar technology, but that's were it ended. The GN is a 3.8L vs. Syclone's 4.3L, 200-R4 tranny vs. 700-R4, air cooled vs liquid cooled I/C, rwd vs. awd.

GN's do not suck off the line. I have seen them literally lift the front end off the ground n stock form. If powerbraked and taken off right, they will kill you right away.

The GN I raced against didn't powerbrake, and when they take off, the turbo does not kick in for a few seconds. It's called Turbo lag as we all know. The 3.8L used by GM in the 80's is not the fastest engine in NA form, so I was able to pull away at first. Once the turbo kicked in, it was over. I mean, I was only ahead for about 3 seconds, but it was fun while it lasted

its all about the owner and how much he wants to beat you.
torque brake those suckas and let the turbo spool, they really hauled
i used to race them with my 88 gt 5.0 all the time, close race, especially if it was hot, they really did not have the technology of todays intercoolers
any mods, fuggetabout it, all you saw was tail lites

The Turbo T/A did have the same motor as the grand national, which made the turbo t/a faster because it was lighter. And a turbo t/a for the record is my dream car, i would take that car almost over anything on the road

One the older Turbo Magazine had an article on a modified turbo T/A, it ran a 9.99 1/4! There are at least 3 turbo T/A's floatin' around in Vancouver.
