Race with new pontiac GTO

Ended up side by side at a light with a new GTO yesterday. The guy kept looking over at me so I rolled my window down. He was a real show off and revved his engine a few times. I couldn't resist so I asked him how it ran. He just said "real good" in a kind of cocky-ass way. So he is revving a little more probably to 3000-4000 rpm and I am thinking about how much fun its gonna be when the light turns green. I look over and get his attention again and kind of nod and point forward to see if he will bite. He says "do you think?" Whatever that meant. We sat there for what seemed forever then I see the light going yellow on the other side and start brake torquing a little. Light is green, I hear him spinning tires and I am out of there. I have him by a full car off the line. We race to about 70mph and I catch traffic and slow down. By 70 he was about 2-2.5 cars behind me. I pulled on him the whole time. Afterward he got behind some other cars in traffic and turned off shortly after so I never got to see his face again-too bad. Nothing worse that a cocky driver who can't even drive his car right.

I doubt it, unless he really wants to trade his bad-ass RWD V8 in on a FWD V6, which I doubt. More likely he was thinking "I really need to learn how to drive this car". Not to take away from your kill but you said it yourself......he spun--you left. I would think a new GTO properly launched will not find itself down by 2 cars to 70 against a car that runs 13.7.

I know that, from what I've heard (haven't seen any run personally) the automatics are running high-13's/low-14's and the 6-speeds are getting mid-13's. Either tranny, launched properly on a 350hp RWD car should not find itself down by 2 cars up to only 70 against a FWD car that runs 13.7. There really is no argument there, it's common sense.

It's still a good kill but it falls into the anything can happen category. I beat a dude in an 01 Stang GT 5-speed the other day, do I think my car is faster? No, but I won and it was a good kill.

I just like the fact that he has some doubts in his mind now about how fast his "bad-ass RWD V-8" car really is. And yes hopefully he tries to figure out how to drive it.

I see more anti-fanboyism here than negativity.

By the way, good kill on the Monaro. Hard work pays off.

:captobvious: what difference does it make that the CLS is modified...run what you brung right? no one was comparing a stock GTO to a Stock CLS as that would be foolish.

The original quote made it appear so.

Run what ya brung. I've had to say that to many people around here when they start whining after I suprise them.

Hey are you going to make it up to LVD on May 21st? Private rental, 120 spots. That'll allow many many runs. Insurance went up so the price is steeper than usual.

I know, I almost raced a heavily modded gtp that was sandbagging me telling me he only had an intake and headers...I guess with my untrained eye I wouldn't have known until I got smoked but apparently he has a 12 second GTP! He told me because when I challenged him on their board someone mentioned he blow his 4th motor and then he told me his mods! That would have been a nasty surprise for me!

Yeah, I remember you and that situation. I started that thread on their board for some 'friendly' races. John (the guy you were gonna race) has a lot of problems on his hands right now. His car won't be race ready for a while.

Have you ever taken your car to a drag strip? As I mentioned above, there is an event coming soon to Lebanon Valley Dragway.

I never even heard of LVD. I thought you were talking to someone else. I've only been to the track twice (9 runs total) but I hope to go maybe a couple times this season. Closest one to me is Epping. I'm trying to make it up there this weekend but it might be closed (just got word).

I make it down to NY on occasion so I'll see.

Flint, I will give you credit. You know how to drive your car. I believe your story is true, because I drove a 6 speed GTO yesturday. The car is a beast. It takes no skill to do a burnout, smoking the tires comes natural to this powerhouse. What does take skill is launching it with minimal wheel spin. If he knew his car better or had an auto you would have got a run for your money. By reading your list of mods I know your car is very fast. I will say that the GTO is capable of chirping 4th gear. Speed wise you are chirping the tires in the 80 to 90mph range. That is impressive!

Nice Kill. I am a little disappointed in the performance of the new GTO. It is just too heavy. A stock GTO against a S/C CL-S should be a drivers race, and it sounds like this one was. you can drive, and he couldn't. Maybe he made a turn into the Pontiac dealership to have them tell him why he lost to "some big import". It would have been awesome to have this one on video!!!

Nice kill! I love the story. I believe that the Monaro is available with a bigger engine in Australia? Why didn't they bring that here? Some silly GM rule probably.

I might have seen the new GTO around...probably missed it with the rest of the jelly bean shaped cars on the highway.

I have a Pontiac fiend friend. He can't stand to even hear the new GTO mentioned.
