Question regarding mustangs???

Hey,

My girlfriends sister just moved out here and she has a mustang i dont know what year but im pretty sure its a base model. I guess her check engine light came on and she took it midas. Midas told her she had 4 bad catalytic converters and it would cost 1700 to replace them. Now i dont know a damn thing about mustangs but this doesnt sound right? Can anyone help me, could this be true?

Im going to have her take her car to my mechanic next week but i just want to learn a little bit.

Thanks in advance guys.

Im not saying Midas is wrong, but sometimes when you take it to places like that, they will tell you something is wrong, when its not just to get more $$ out of you....and 4 catalytic converters? I only thought there was 1.....This definitely sounds fishy and I would have someone you trust look at it before she makes a decision....

yeah its the 4 catalytic converters thing that sounds fishy as hell to me too. Im going to have my guy look at it, but i want to be sure on the cat thing. I dont trust places midas, never have. Sides my guy will fix it right the first time and for less. But yeah anyone else know about the 4 cat thing?

my 5.0 has two but some of the newer ones do have four. Once you find out what year and # of cylinders, check here:

http://www.catalyticonverters.com/fo...converter.html

I'd take it to another place and have them check the oxygen sensors first. They'd be *much* cheaper to replace and would also cause the check engine light to go on if they're bad. Don't spend anywhere near $1700 regardless

according to that page, it looks like 96-00 V6's had them. I don't really know for sure on the newer ones though. If it is that new, I'd have a hard time believing all the cats would be bad. that's why they should check the O2 sensors first. If the cats are bad, it's an opportunity to upgrade to some free-flowing aftermarket stuff

Thanks again.

Im going to have my mechanic check it out, best damn mechanic iv'e ever known. Basically does all my work at cost.

And her sister doesnt know the first thing about driving a car, putting performance parts on her stock stang would be asking for nothing but trouble but thanks

You might also check in the warranty section of the owners manual. Some of the emission related parts are warrantied much longer than the regular warranty. I think some might go out to 7 years.
