question about torque converter and second gear scratch

hello everybody. i have a question about the tc. i have read that it helps in improving the quarter mile and such, but i have a question. how does it work? does it just increase the stall/idle speed? wouldn't that eat up gas like nothing else? and also. does anybody know how to peel out while changing into second? i mean, my car does it every once in a while, but it doesn't do it everytime. thanks

Look in the FAQ section -- at least there used to be some info on torque converters there.

The stall speed is changed with the Level 10 job.

The stock tires will chirp into 2nd. The road surface will have a great influence on the "chirping".

BTW -- in some states, making a "Chirp" or squeal off the line can be construed as a an exhibition of speed. (yes, I know you asked about 2nd -- just a thought...)

I once got pulled over for making a chirp when shifting into 2nd. There was a cop sitting in a parking lot, and I was sitting at a stop light about to race a Ford Probe GT. I made no noise off of the line, but had a really loud 2nd gear scratch. The cop pulled me over and yelled at me. He ended up only giving me a warning, but said he could have given me a ticket.
