Question about fuel Efficiency....

Here is the deal you guys... Jens and Wayneg.. might need your expertise on this.
I drove my car pretty hard during breakin... i dont mean redline.. but pretty haul-ass-ish and i have noticed that my mileage never goes above 17mpg even when i drive like a grand ma.... any ideas?
I was thinking of resetting my ECU .. maybe it would readjust my air/fuel mixture to factory and i can drive cool for a while to get a better setup then...
Ideas guys?

Hey, how are you with the CL-S vs the CL-P? I'm guessing you're much happier now!

I get about 15-16 MPG, but I never raced the engine before it had 600 miles on it. I stopped trying to calculate my MPG though since I didn't to know they were actually this low, I'll try again to see if it's improved any.

Ouch! that's damn low! I don't have one so i can't compare but how are your driving it? That is, in sport shift or reg-automatic? Air pressure in tires? How much weight are carrying?

I didn't get great gas mileage before 1000 miles. I have about 9000 miles now and average 24 mpg city and 32 mpg hwy.

All cars usually suck more gas during the break-in period.

Glad you're enjoying it! I thought about getting the P because of the blue option, but decided that 260 hp was more important!

On the highway I have gotten as high as 31.1mpg. Around town and with occasional runs into the triple digits I get 19 to 25mpg. Driving style will definitely play a huge factor, but I have never gotten anything less than 18mpg.

Well i am carrying only my skinny ass... just 140lbs... and pretty much nothing else int he car.... air pressure is nominal... and i am driving in a mix of auto and ss ... what really bugged me is that when i specifically drove like a snail for a tank of gas... i still averaged about the same...

Well I hope my gas mileage has improved, I'll find out within the next week or so, but I doubt it. I have about 6,750 miles on it now. It also probably has to do with the fact that most of my driving is done weaving in and out of rush hour traffic, about 30 miles each way. I hope I get what many people have been claiming, somewhere in the lower 20s.

If you only driving from block to block in packed traffic, the mileage can get pretty bad. My wife's car, an Altima stick, gets 15-16 mpg in drive loop she's doing. That's 10 miles to work on city streets and it takes 30-45 minutes to get to work. So, I've tried the same driving circuit and have gotten the same or better driving like grandma. If the car is stopped in traffic, the mileage is going to be really bad.

Are you talking about going from stop sign to stop sign and light to light in traffic?

If you are getting that kind of mileage on the freeway at 60 mph, it is time for a trip to the dealer.

How far are you going in that 15 minutes *or* are you moving in traffic and making a lot of stop and goes?

I would give it some more mileage. Don't even bother checking till after 1000 miles. Also, you dont really drive more than 15 minutes (lucky) on the daily commute. The engine barely has time to warm up and stabilize. Take a nice cruise some weekend for a couple of hours of driving on the hiway or country roads. I'm sure you will see a difference. Also, fuel type and quality will make a difference. Make sure you use premium and get it from a busy station. Lastly remember, that kick you get from the vtec does'nt come free

I've had my CL since 3/28/01. I have 1,500 miles on it and have never gotten below 21.1 MPG. That's driving fast and slow, highway and city! I'm thrilled. I hope it gets better with "age".

One thing I've noticed after all the discussions on here about mileage is that the drivers in the big cities typically get MUCH WORSE gas mileage than those of us in smaller cities. There are LOTS of factors for sure, but traffic is one very big one, IMHO. In Tucson, I got 19-22mpg in all city driving. It was down towards 19 if I only did short trips (2 miles to work) and up to 22mpg if I went some longer distances on the weekend. This also has a lot to do with where I lived in Tucson. If I lived down near the UofA where traffic is much worse then my mileage would probably have been worse. But I lived out on the eastside which is less populated and hence has less traffic.

The other thing that affects gas mileage that I forgot about are the additives that are put into the gas in different states. In CT we have MTBE in our gas which seems to LOWER our mileage. I only used to get 15-17 MPG with my 99 Chrysler 300M. In the low 20's if I went on a LONG trip. So far, I think the CL is great!

Just an update. Closing in on 2,500 miles since 3/28 and still averaging over 20 MPG with the CL-S in day to day driving! Very pleased with this car so far compared to what I had before!

I know it's common sense for most but I always left my climate control on full auto. Now I press the button to turn the a/c off because even in the winter the a/c was running. I know this because i was getting that engine surge when stopped at a light. As soon as I turned off the a/c the surge stopped for good until the next time I kicked the a/c on.

My point...I was getting better gas milage after I turned the a/c off. Common sense yes, but I didn't realize the a/c would run during the winter when I had it set to 72-75 degrees F in the car and it was 25 F outside.

I've had my Type S since February of last year and it has about 11.000 miles.

I drive in a mix of city/highway, and I've gotten 22.1 mpg overall mileage. I've never had it on a trip.

Good point that I forgot to mention above. Those mileage figures, for the most part, are with the AC off! It's only recently that the weather warmed up here. Besides, I like this car with the moonroof open and both windows open. I suppose when it gets really hot and humid here I'll use the AC more. Then I'll see what the MPG's are. I was careful during break-in and did not abuse the car. Still don't. Have put those 260 horses to use recently. It does move! I think I've surprised a few people who thought they were going to get ahead of me while merging on I-95! Didn't happen! Passed 2,500 miles today. Have never gotten less than 300 miles per tank. Can't wait to take it on a long trip and watch that mileage climb into the 30's! NEVER got close to that with my old ride, long trip or not!
