Question for the 6 speeders...

When you are accellerating onto the highway onramp and onto the highway, do you find yourself skipping 5th gear? I usually like to get on it a bit when getting on the highway and by the time I'm at the highway and merging, I usually just go from 4th to 6th or 3rd to 6th. Anyone else?

No, never upshifting ......I like to follow the natural flow of things. But I will downshift from 6 to 4 when needed.

I skip gears all the time. It makes driving more challenging as I try to engage at just the right RPM and when you skip gears, that becomes more challenging.

The more torque you have the easier it is to do.

Having a MT changes the whole driving experience.

Not really. It's habit so I row them. Although I have been trying it the last few months.

I did all the time when I had my Accord. And when I drove my chick's 350Z, I'd always skip 5th for some reason.

Rarely...coming onto a highway I like to keep it in 5th to get to my spot on the road & settle in. Settling in = shifting into 6th. Since most folks in the Mid-Atlantic do about 70-80 average on the highway I like the extra kick that 5th gives me.

Around town, I may skip 1st if I'm rolling or on a downhill and get her going in 2nd. Other than that I feel the gears are there for a reason

Now downshifting is a much more fun topic! I love going from 6th to 3rd on the hwy at about 60mph so I can listen to the motor sing!

Okay then who here shifts without using the clutch pedal? Both into and out of gears? I will sometimes shift out of gear without using the clutch pedal and sometimes go from 4th to 3rd without using the clutch pedal.

Well, I wasn't really talking about downshifting and skipping gears as much. I frequently go 3rd--> 6th or 4th --> 6th onto the highway. And the 6th --> 3rd is very much fun

I kinda figured many others skip 5th gear also. Thanks for the responses.

I always clutch it, but I admit there are quite a few times when the shifter literally jumps out of gear (usually from 3 to 4) when I hit the clutch.

damn VT driving laws, the highest highway speed limit is 65, usually its 55...so i usually merge onto the highway in 2nd or at the shift from 2nd-3rd, but from there no i never skip gears...ive never even used 6th gear in my car before!!

i take that back, going 120 around a curve i didnt want to have the torque and HP of 5th gear so i upshifted so i wouldnt spin out.

This is false. The synchros allow you to smoothly shift into a gear, they do not care which gear it is or whether it is in order.

I had a rare 6mt 2005.5(2006) C230 Kompressor Sedan. I talked to a top MB mechanic that travels the U.S. and he said it that it would never hurt the tranny at all. He told me the way MB built the 6mt trannies are pretty indestructible. That is unless I'm dumping the clutch as often as possible.

I skip 4th sometimes, and 5th all the time, especially when merging onto the expressway.

If you wait an extra second it will rev match and wont put any extra wear on the syncros.

I never skip upshifts, but what I will do is short shift through the higher gears once I've reached the desired freeway speed...

I always row through the gears but I don't always release the clutch in each gear. I often go from 6th to 4th or 3rd but I make sure to row into 5th (and 4th if I'm going to 3rd).
