Ques for those that painted your calipers....

At what mileage did you paint them? How dirty were they? How did you clean them?

I went to do that today and there was an unbelievable amount of grease and muck on them. They were black in places hidden by the wheel. I scrubbed one section that wasn't even that dirty for a couple minutes, said "screw it" and just put the wheel back on. This sucks!! I didn't expect this to be an all day job!

Yes, for me it was an all day job. With over 20,000 miles, my calipers were not that bad. My paint kit came with the necessary tools and sprays to clean and prep the caliper prior to painting. Some would argue that the $45 I paid could have been better spent elsewhere, all I needed was a $5 can of spray paint. I wanted to do it right with no guessing (after all these are the brakes) and I didn't want to put anything on the brakes that might degrade their performance. Mine cleaned nicely prior to painting, what I paid extra was worthwile for me.

Ken,

Do you know what the stuff was in the kit that you used to clean it? I bought paint specifically for calipers, but it wasn't a kit. Just a $6 can of spray paint.

All i did was use some wheel cleaner and gave em a quick rub down.

Only like 3000 miles on mine though.

I used PlastiKote Caliper Paint... $4.00 a can plus a $2 rebate... my calipers came out great...

Almost 900 miles on them and no probs so far.

Not bad for a 3 hr job.

I will go with the basic stuff ($5 can ) on the second round this Fall. I was just playing it safe the first time. Should I stick with silver or go with a different colour?

Calipers can be cleaned with the same stuff Air Conditioner Repairment use to clean Aluminium Coils on outside units. I forget the name of the stuff, but dilluted in water it works awesome. Calipers ONLY. I used it on my 97 vette so that I could paint the calipers black and sand off the black paint to reveal the raised CORVETTE letters on the front calipers. Make sure you use HIGH temp paint...H
