Public Road Courses

Does anyone know of any public road courses were you can take your car and freely drive? I know of public 1/4 mile tracks, but I have never seen any road courses.
I split time between NC and PA. Anyone know of tracks in either of these states?
Thanks guys!
Chris

VIR is the only one I know of and it's in VA. Try looking around on www.scca.com

maybe .org. But do a search for SCCA

VIR is a good one, and nationally sanctioned race circuit at that.

Summit Point is in MD.

Carlisle is in PA.

Yes, but it's in the eastern portion of the state where MD, VA and WVA all come together. About one and 1/2 hour from Washington or Baltimore; 2 and 1/2 from Richmond, VA; and one and 1/4 from Harrisburg, PA.

Depending on what part of PA you're in try Beaver Run near Pittsburg too.

Now you're asking the right questions!

There are dozens, if not hundreds of road courses in America, although I have no idea what's around you. I don't know if any of them have genuine "open days", though, like tracks do in England. Usually, a racing/track organization rents the track for the use of its members and guests. SCCA and NASA, for example, rent road courses and then conduct their own races and driving schools. In many communities, there might also be a local track-day organization.

If the road course has an online calendar, check to see who's got the track scheduled and if they are offering public driving schools or track days. Also, check out your local SCCA, BMWCCA, PCA, and NASA chapters to see what they've got lined up. And have fun!
