proof that a new V1 is out?
I was reading all these recent posts here on radar detectors, looked at the two other web sites that have recent tests, then took a good look at my V1.
There is a difference
At the first site, radartest.com, it is an older model V1 they tested. You can clearly see the rear laser sensor below the rear antennea (on the right of the unit). They also say the V1 was the largest and heaviest unit tested. My V1 is much lighter than the escort 8500!!! Also, when I compare the picture of the 8500 on this site to the 8500 I had, there are several subtle differences, so maybe the escort they tested is not a production unit?
At the next site, speedzones.com, they indicated valentine did not send them a unit. I don't know where they got the unit they tested, but the picture angle is tough to tell if it has the right-side rear laser sensor. However, you can read the panel, and it has the word "laser" next to the light.
My unit only has a "L", not the full word!! Most likey because the rear laser sensor was moved to the middle of the unit, making it thinner. This sight also tested an older V1 unit.
Now motortrend's review. They didn't even do a review, they just published the one done by speedzones!! What is really interesting is the picture they show is the latest unit, which looks like mine which was bought 2 weeks ago. And they also say the V1 was the largest unit tested, but my V1 is much lighter than the 8500. The 8500 is also longer, with the V1 being wider. Physically holding the 2 units gives the impression the V1 is more compact than the 8500. After holding a friend's V1 and my 8500 side by side, I bought the V1 to try for 30 days.
Anyone else notice this? So when can someone do a review with the latest models of each detector??

I don't really believe ALL of those tests anyway. Since the best radar detector is a matter of preference in addition to other facts (range, sensitivity, etc), YMMV.

The only one I ever believed was Car & Driver's. They explained what they were doing, why, how and gave the results. They've done these tests a few times over the years and it always seems unbiased and trustworthy.
Ever notice how some of the pics in the mag when they do stories on cross-country runs, all the drivers have V1s in the windshield?

And motortrend doesn't really know what they are doing when testing radar, they are pure car guys...
