Tech, this is old news.... Shell is already selling 91 octane. Valero and others may be still selling 92, but 91 is slowly being phased it. Give it about 2 weeks, everyone will be running 91. The stations in Los Angeles are already 91...

We need to find a way to get 92 again. I don't want to have to mix in 100 octane. Shit, I hope they at least lower prices...

In your Bush bashing, you forgot to mention that octane is being lowered because MTBE is being phased out. MTBE is nasty stuff. A tiny amount can pollute a huge amount of ground water. Even the clean air eco-nazis are against it.

MTBE is actualy already in a ton of our drinking water.
It wouldn't hurt to just pop a few gallons of 100 octane in the car.
Nobody believes that it helps out car -- so I know the secret is now safe.
People DON't use 100 octane when racing me please -- OK!

After living in California for 34 years, I can assure you that the dreaded "California Eco-Weenies" have had their hands in this long before GW, "the clone", has. Severe NIMBY complex in that state. Time for Octane Boosters. Hey, this is an Oil Company conspiracy to make us buy booster products manufactured by them!!!

Why is everyone uptight about the octane going down to 91? If your engine doesn't knock at 91 octane then you are not getting any performance boost by going to 92 or even 100. Octane doesn't give your engine more power, it simply helps prevents the fuel from detonating prematurely under compression. The higher the compression of the engine, the higher the octane required. So, unless you've done something to your engine that would increase the compression, why waste money on 100 octane fuel or octane boosters?

Our cars will retard the timing slightly (5%) and PREVENT any knocking. Go ahead and put regular gas in your car, you will not hear ANY knocking or pinging, but the timing will be retarded and you will lose power. Our cars (Type S) need about 93 octane to run properly at their 11:1 compression ratio.

First... prices would not drop by adding ethanol.. because ethanol costs more than MTBE.
Second... since when was the compression ratio 11:1 ?
3.2 CL - 9.8:1
Type S - 10.5:1
Everycar out there has 'knock retard' ... like what Technique said... BUT... if you hooked up diagnostics to your car... I doubt you would be seeing alot of KR. There is really no need to spend the what? $4/gal on 100 octane fuel...
The only time 100 might be helpful is if you are running a SC or some type of forced induction system. In that case.. your KRs will go way up.. due to the added heat and compression from the SC or Turbo. Not to mention.. you have to be running at WOT all the time... under normal accel. you dont have to worry about KR.

Ya, it's 10.5:1, my bad. I guess I like to round up.
Anyway, perhaps 91 will work just fine. But I've blended 100 octane and 92 octane to make 94 octane and I can feel a slight difference. Many other people on this board have used 100 octane and have said the same. It's best compared to driving your car on a 50 degree day to driving it on a 80 degree day. Slightly better performance.
Either way, it sucks that gas is going down to 91 octane and prices are staying the same.

Just a thought, but if a higher compression isn't very useful...why do people run 12+:1 compression on their all motor cars and use race fuel? 91 is used as a minimum because it is lowest premium rating available. This is not to say that higher octane wouldn't help the car run more efficiently.
