Powdercoating Exhaust
Has anyone had their exhaust powdercoated black? Being that the Greddy's canisters are so large, and protrude out the back of the car, I was thinking about having my Canisters and Y-Pipe powdercoated black, and just leave the tips chrome. The only car I've seen this on was my buddy's STI, and I though it looked good. If anyone has this done to their exhaust on their CL, please post some pics!!!
Thanks!~
Thanks!~

you can't because the powdercoating won't withstant the heat... and I hope no one posts otherwise.. because this is a fact, not my opinion.. it will eventually peal..
yea JET HOT is def. a good way to go though

Don't the Greddy's tend to rust after a bit?? A friend of mine has an 01 CL-S....the kid that slammed with 20's.....anyway, his pipes look like they've been to hell and backk with all rust spots, and all other types of sh^t on them....I'm just saying, not only will painting your pipes make them less noticable, but will also keep them from rotting.....Correct?

I don't see how powdercoating will withstand the heat. My Greddy's have changed colors, due to the heat, but they haven't started to rust. The best bet is to paint them with a high temp paint.

The problem with high temp paint is your just doing the outside and so will be keeping the heat within the piping material much more and possibly similar to headers that are wrapped you might experience some cracks here and there more so if its the downpipe ie. closer to the engine.
I had my Comptech headers Jet-Hot coated and it costed about $250 until I sold them for some Comptech 6speed headers which have no coating on them. It requires some work to clean them but it definantly helps a little specially if your someone like CleanCL whos going NA, then its all the difference in the world. Plus it limits how much heat radiates outward towards the alternator and electric motors always like less heat

if you do jet-hot or something that can withstang the temperature, i dont think you will have an issue with cracking. it's possible but not likely.
also like accord_v6_400m touched on, the heat stays inside the pipe and is not radiated outward. this means the exhaust flows better/faster. which reduces backpressure too.

The Jet hot coating is bot inside and out which is much better then doing it yourself but also more expensive. The cracking would occur if you did it on a part that gets hot but only on the outside, like wrapping headers. That extra exhaust gas velocity definatley helps out with exhaust scavenging.
Hopefully Im not going to far of topic buts here are some pics of different colors available through Jet Hot at www.jet-hot.com
Sterling Silver 1300:
Different colors of 1300F coating
Higher temp shiny one:
matte black 2000 (goes up to 2450F)
Heres a comparison of the two shiny ones with the use of larger pictures:

i think jethot by default does all the headers in the higher temp one. it doesnt have a chrome appearance, but much more luster than just a ceramic coat color. all headers i ever sent to jethot always come back looking like the 2nd picture. its more silver than chrome but they look gorgous. they never fade, always stay cold, and are easy to clean.
i was going to just get the silver color because i think you pay more for the black. if not, then i'll go black. btw - jethot only coats the outside of catalytic converters and mufflers. which means if your exhaust system is attached to a resonator, muffler, or converter, they will only coat the outside. like i said, the chances of a crack are extremely slim.
i'm not sure how off topic if at all this has gone, but if i keep talking i'll reveal one of my suprises that i don't think anyone has done.

Back to a MT!
When I put my headers on my car I had to pull the whole exhaust system off so I would grind of the cat bolts, so I just sprayed the mufflers and pipes up to the cat in flat black rustoleum made for bbq grills. Over a year later it still looks good. Cost me about $5...
