Poor 3 series

Last night, about midnight, I was on the NJ Turnpike pretty much all by myself going about 80mph.

Out of nowhere, I can see BMW lights coming up behind me fast. Finally, he stays right behind me with 4 other lanes open for him, he decides to ride me ass.

After about 30 seconds, he rapidly swings around me and tried to pass. He's pushing it and I let him get ahead by a bit. Suddenly I drop the SS to 4th and take off past him till about I was about 3-4 car lengths ahead of him. At this point I hit about 120.

I give him another chance, we line up and go at it again. As we are rolling (at about 75-80) I give him a bit of a head start till I saw his taillights, then blow by him again as he were stading still.

After being blown by this CL-P two times in a row, it looks like he gave up because he fell wayyy back. He must have dropped down to 60mph cause he fell back fast while I was still going about 85-90.

Poor guy. I hardly race, but we were the only one on the road, and I wanted to see what my car could do. Turnpike is the perfect place to do this since it is about 5 lanes wide. Just be sure not to get hit by a trooper of course.

I am guessing that it was probably the 325 and not the 330. Not sure though. I know it was a coupe and looked fairly shiny and new.

Nice kill.

Sounds like a 323 or 325i for sure.

it could of been a 328 also, those are extremely slow for some reason. its only when you step up to the 330 that you get some comparable performance. a 325 and 328 are ridiculously slow, especially if you are modded at all.

Not really, the 328i was down on HP but nearly the same torque as the 330i. Stock for stock my old E46 328i was close to my old '01 CL-S. My wife and I ran each other occasionally in both cars. It also weighs about 300+ lbs less than the CL-S.

But then again, the BMW was a 5-Speed manual versus that 5AT CL-S. That makes a noticeable difference.

This was only in a straight line. Throw a few curves into the mix and the CL-S was hard pressed to keep up.

Not at all. This was stock for stock. Once the intake and headers went on the CL-S's margin was increased. Heck, if I let her win and she knew it I would be in for it.

Remember, this was in her E46 328i manual versus my '01 CL-S (5AT obviously). Had hers been an auto (not that she would have taken one, she prefers manuals) the margin would have been even greater.

Of interesting note I learned form Global Imports BMW. Of the manual transmission 3-Series they sell, over 60% are to females. So the chances are higher that if a male is driving the car it would be an automatic.

scalbert...when you say stock for stock they were close.....HOW close do you mean by that? 1-2 car lengths? A door? An inch? What? People's views on a "close race" are very different from one another. I'm just curious

When I say close this would be within two lengths to about 80 MPH. By about 60 the BMW was just at the CL-S's rear bumper. At about 30 MPH the BMW was often slightly in the lead if not even.

I'm am confused about the surprise. Looking the WHP numbers and the weight discprepancy the differences are minimal. The 5-Speed manual 328i will put down close to 170 WHP. The CL-S 5AT will put down about 200 WHP. But yet the BMW weighs in at nearly 300 lbs less. This still does give the CL-S a slight HP/lb ratio advantage but not as great as everyone would assume. Looking at the WTQ number and the weight ratio and the BMW comes out better. Lastly, add in RWD and the ability to out launch the CL-S and it makes for a decent race.
