Polarg M-6 road lamp hazard?

The guy at the local speed shop warned me that the Polarg M-6 could melt the plastic lens on the road lamp. Is this true? Has anyone had any problems with the larger bulbs?

Do you know how much room you have between the bulb and the lens? Can you tell if the lens is getting hot? If the outside temps are around freezing in your neck of the woods you may not see a problem until spring.

True about the burned out bulbs, one of the biggest reasons I replaced my fogs was because the right one burned out.

3/4 inch clearance must be good enough if you have not had a problem. The other warning the guy told me was with the wiring. I guess that could overload also. I think i'll take my chances, if it burns up i'll replace with a better housing. Thanks for the info....

Only problem I'm having, is a missmached color on the bulbs. The drivers side looks a little blue(hate that look). I'm going to get another bulb on Saturday (while I get the headers installed-YEA!)and see if I can match the passenger side.

19169 bulbs look almost identical to M4's.
They sold u those cuz they match the juice rating of 12v-5w (stock bulb)
however, m6's are 12v-18w

I put in the PIAA 19170 and thought they were too dim (better than stock tho). I had them for a week and replaced them with the M6's. Brighter due to the higher power rating.

If anyone wants to buy my PIAA's for $10 I'll mail them to you and you can send me the $10 after you've installed them. I paid around $20 with shipping. I think you can get them for $15 plus tax or shipping. Just looking to make it worth my time. I'll check this forum for a response.

I have to say a couple months ago the piaa's were hot but after seeing a piaa in person it didn't look so great. too weak for me. That's why I got the polarg 18watts. When I took my car to the dealer for my 7500 everyone in the service bay said it looks much better and it matched the hid's better too. also if you take pictures of light it never looks the same in person. IMO.

Wouldn't there be recalls if that happened?

Putting higher wattage bulbs into the stock housing and causing a problem would not justify a recall.

the guy is probably full of it. i had those 18w=36w raybrigs in and no problems until they burned, but that was 'cuz of the raybrigs...right now i have the 16w generics in (same size as the polargs)...no problems.

the only problem i did have was i tried retrofitting a foglight halogen (36w) and now i have dime size distortions in the lens right above where the bulb was...so the housing can't take this kind of heat, but it can take anything not halogen.

as for the wiring, i checked that too...it is the same guage as the high beam wires, and i also checked a chart i had and the guage of wire can take up to over 300w at 12v. (i think the wiring for the hids are the same too, and xenons can spike up to 300w at some ridiculous voltage before stabilizing).

as for the connectors (gray plastic part), they appear to be of a material that can handle the heat better than the housing, so if the housing can handle it, then the connector sure can...and most of the heat is at the bulb part, not the connector.

if your housing couldn't handle the heat, it would've shown something already.

Mrdeeno, thanks for the info. it sounds like you've already lived through the road lamp upgrade. The polarg 12v 18w M-6 should work fine. The guy in the shop must deal with people that damage their cars eveyday, and probably does'nt want to hear it if I damage something.
