Pics of my chrome shift plate

Finally got it finished. Well paint remover didn't work. So I ended up having to pick the paint away with my fingernails. My nails are gone now.

I have to say this is probably one of the best mods I've done to my car in a long time. It looks so sweet in person.

Just so you know, this will only work with the 99 shift plate.

Wow if you carry on that "real wood", and chrome theme into the cabin it would look hot.

It will only work with the 99TL shift plate. That was the only year they made the plate base in chrome plastic.

O'kay, I am not sure if my eyes are playing tricks on me, but it looks like the shifter is coming up out of the shift plate instead of the shift gate.

Its in park. The chromed gate below the shifter is reflecting the image of the steel rod and since it lines up well, the shifter looks longer.

so youre saying that this is the infamous goof up plate that Acura had in chrome but decided to have a silver plastic coat on top of it?
And then you decided dipped it in some sort of solution to
break up the plastic coat?

Well I first tried soaking it in paint thinner, but it didn't make any difference. Then I took some 600 grit sandpaper to try to remove the top layer of finish. I was able to reveal a little bit of the chrome underneath and I started picking the paint off with my fingernail. About an hour later, that was what I got.

A little 3M Swirl Mark Remover and some Plexus to polish it up and it looks so nice.

so you didn't scratch the chrome with the sandpaper or your fingernail? Can this be done on a 2001 cl-s?

I was told that you can have the shift plate chromed. Problem is finding someone that will do it.

Remember the plate is plastic, so chroming it is a different animal that chroming wheels. Somebody should call around to see if it can be done.

rondog, there are a few corners that have the chrome worn off from my sanding, but even up close it's hard to tell. My fingernails didn't scratch it too bad.

Took some 3M Swirl Mark Remover and then some Plexus and it shined up really well.

i've been working on this since last summer, sending my shift gate all over the place. nobody is willing to guarantee that it will turn out alright. i think 4pumped found me a place in phoenix that'll do it, so i already bought another one just in case they f it up.

i have a question?

My shift gate is scratched up from keys and what not. Was it easy to take off? And is there a replacement for it?

Very easy. Carefully remove the plastic surround that goes around the shift plate. It's fragile so don't pull too hard. If you pry up each corner a little and pull it straight up you can get it pretty easy.

Then just grab a corner of the shift plate and pop it off.

The shift plate is around $30.

NP, remember you have to take your shift knob off to get the plate off. You'd figure that out eventually.

Not sure about TL's but to safely get the shift gate off the CL you need to:

1. Twist off the shifter knob (righty-tighty, lefty-loosy)

2. Pry off this outer piece ....

3. Use a tiny screw driver like so to get the actual gate off

4. Eureka ... it's off!!!

Great Post on Removing the shiftgate fbazakos

I was looking for some info on how to do this to do some cleaning. Orginal cupholders, corners and Starbucks coffee have taken their toll. I did a search for removing shift gate and found the above excellent post, complete with pix.
gotta love this site!
thanks a lot fbazakos
