This is a clear view of how many different parts our engine's power goes through. Everything that's in the way of that power to the wheels, is parasitic. Nice photos and very educational, I dont know much about auto trannies at all.

So where did this tranny fail exactly? What parts were broken?

4th plates look a little burnt but it's hard to tell just from pics. Looks nicer than the Chevy auto transes I've helped take apart.
I don't know what "failed" from those pics - things look good except for the aforementioned discoloration of the 4th gear pack and slightly the 3rd as well. My eyes aren't truely professional eyes though.

clutch packs are busted... owner claims this is due a failed Torque Converter, for my eyes the ranny core parts look in very good shape...

I never understood how anyone could figure out how to design and build one of these extremely complicated parts. I guess computers must help a lot, but still. I mean hell, I have a hard enough time putting together my lego set!

Very carefully, craigy. If you know what you're doing i imagine it's alot easier than you think. The trick is knowing about cars and engineering. The rest is just trial and error.

well, they don't just design it from scratch, they take previous models and improve them. Thats why man hasn't been able to really do anything extraordinary in one lifespan. I'm not knocking humans, just that we pick up where the previous generation left off, sort of an evolution of design.

Actually, the principle behind the auto tranny is quite simple. It's just a bunch of planetary gears and clutches. Yes there is a lot of parts, and they all have to work together, but the basic principles are easy.

You have to keep in mind the first auto's came out in the early 50's I believe. That pre-dates computers!

What is up with the diferential that he says is in Pic 13. I thought that a diff would be in a stick or 4WD. Clarity someone.

there is always a final gear set is both a manual or auto transmission. Its called the differential. Its after the gear that is selected in the transmission just before the driveshafts (in the power train)
