pics... blacked out and cleared headlights 56K WARNING

hey fellas... this weekend ayougo and i did some work on my cl-s. we cleared out the ambers on my headlights and painted the housing black. we also replaced the bulbs on my driving lights, re-aligned the headlight beams and we washed and waxed both our rides.

took some pics tonight, camera isnt the best (my roommates) and the lighting was kinda whack... but here they are

that last one is my background

what do you guys think? i should take some in the daytime but we had no time to...

hmm painting your housing silver wouldn't be too bad, not sure it'll make it stand out so much. i keep getting comments from people how aggressive the black makes my cl-s look, it does look a little pissed

what kind of spray paint did you use? Did you have to do any kind of prepping before spraying it? I was looking to do the same for mine, as soon as i get my lazy ass up.

ayougo did most of the work... he had done it already on his first gen 2.2CL and helped me out big time. so props to him

we baked the headlights (with the bulbs out, hid assembly out, etc) at 250F for about 20 min. we used a wet towel to humidify the interior of the oven... the headlights were resting on top of the wet towel that was spread out over the baking grill. it is essential to make sure the towel stays wet

after 20 min of that we spread the plastic off and took the housing out. with some relatively soft sandpaper we scuffed up the chrome on the housing so that the paint will apply better. then we sprayed some black paint we got from advance auto parts for like 5 bucks... it was a semi-gloss black paint and it looked nice. we let the housing dry for about an hour to make sure it was dry. oh yea we took the orange reflector out too, that just pops off easily. after the housing was dry we took the clear cover and the reflector body, still separated and put them in the oven to heat it up again. once it was heated up again we put in the housing again and resealed it using sealant, and made sure we had a good seal

thats pretty much how we did it, one headlight at a time.

oh yea i took my bumper off... it was annoynig as hell but ayougo really helped me out

now that i think about it silver wouldn't be too bad a color to paint your housing, but i guess i just wanted some contrast in the front. im gonna paint my grille silver so having the black "eyes" really makes a nice contrast in the car IMO

thanks for all your comments

Can you please take pics in daytime? I'm really curious what it looks like and I'd like to do it on my SMR.

Also, I don't see the difference in cleared out and non-cleared out headlights. Could someone post two pics of 1 cleared and 1 non-cleared next to each other? I keep looking at them and don't see a difference. Maybe I'm crazy.

That looks sweet, how long did it take you to do? I wonder what black would look like on a SMR, or like someone suggested, red on a SMR like the modena.

That looks really good. Did you take it to a shop to get it painted or did you do it yourself? How did you know what color to use?

i did it my self. i paint cars and bikes. inside the drivers door is ur paint code. u just take it to an auto paint supply place and have them make up the color if you dont have a toneing system to use. the paint doesnt always match up becuase they use alternate colors from the factory. so some times u have to tone the premix

Cool, so how did you know which color to use? Did you mix colors or did you just pick one that looks the closest your blue?

Can you take one from the front? I really like it. I wonder if someone could photochop red just to see what that would look like.

Thanks

Edit: oh ok, just read the rest of your response. Hmm, I think when I don't have to drive my car for a few days, I'll just take it to a paint shop and have them paint it for me. Don't wanna mess something like this up.

no the paint company i had the premix made by is really good. the company is deltron. it matchs almost perfect with the agean blue. its diffrent for every color and paint company. like shrewin willams paint hardly matchs. global is pretty good and deltron is the best i have used. put if dont know how to paint leave it for some one who does.

make sure they are cleared. try to find a ppg retailer in ur area. they sell deltron paint. u can have them test dot it on the car befor u pay for it tyo make sure it matchs. dont worry paint reducer will take the dot right off and not harm ur factory paint. if it doesnt match ask them to tone it to ur color. they should be able to handle that. good luck and let me know if u need any more help

Actually, these guys painted my M5 lip spoiler and it perfectly matches the color, so I'm gonna take it to them. They did a really good job and only charged me 30 bucks for the spoiler.

I posted earlier how I don't seem to notice the difference between cleared and non-clreared headlights. Could someone post 2 pics of cleared and non cleared next to each other and shoe me what's the diference. I keep comparing them but don't seem to notice anything. Maybe I'm just Could someone point out the differences?
