Parking brake...umm...

Two of my idiot friends wanted to test out my car yesterday, so being the nice guy that I am, I reluctantly agreed. The first guy had to back out of the spot, and FORGOT to put the parking brake up, and hit the gas while backing up. When he pressed the brake, we heard a sick-sounding squeaking noise. After that he lifted it up and drove around for a little while. Then he just drove around the parking lot for a bit, and then put the car in park and the parking brake lightly on. My second friend hops in WITHOUT me in the car, and takes off. He floors it a few times, WITH THE PARKING BRAKE ON.

Now my question is, will that have damaged the parking brake at all? Thanks.

Oh, that's a relief then. How long are our brakes supposed to last?

Man I wish we had a handbrake.

Your brakes are prolly okay, but you REALLY need 1) a new set of friends, and 2) your head examined for letting them drive your ride as you KNOW they were capable of such idiocy in the first place!

haha great, me and my big mouth. I should've posted "A unruly maniac stole my care yesterday and drove it around with my parking brake on." There would've been way less flames that way

You see, they weren't idiots until AFTER the little parking brake incident, that is why they are idiots

Now stop flaming me about it!!

That is one of the reasons why I hate this foot-operated parking brake setup. It is such an unintuituve way to operate the brake.
After 3 months, I still have to consciously remember to release the brake each time!

i htink the parking brakes are rear drums and are separate from the main rear discs. i'm not positive but i heard this somewhere.

as for the location, i like it there...no one complains that 90% of all mercedes have a foot operated brake.

From what I understand, the parking brake is a rear drum brake within the regular rear disc brakes...

Huh? Drum brakes on a modern car? I thought only Chrysler, Ford and GM did that?

Frankly, I never use the parking brake. We don't really have hills and I never seem to really need it. When was the last time a car "slipped out of gear"?

Tell the truth now. It wasn't your freinds now was is? You parked the car and put the brake on then forgot to turn it off didn't you? You just won't admit it so you made up your "friends" did it. j/k

FYI, read what is written before reacting...

This is what I found in the specs :

Braking System: Dual-diagonal, power assisted, 4-wheel disc brakes

Front Discs: Ventilated, 11.8 in. (300 mm) diameter; 1.1 in. (28 mm) rotor thickness

Rear Discs: Solid, 11.1 in. (282 mm) diameter; 0.35 in. (9 mm) rotor thickness

Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)

3.2CL - 3-channel system with 4 wheel speed sensors and electric/hydraulic control

Type S - 4-channel system with 4 wheel speed sensors and electric/hydraulic control

Parking Brake: Drum in disc type, mechanically actuated on rear wheels

Many manufacturers do this.

It is quite common to use a drum for a parking brake... it prevents warping and excess wear of your discs.

most regular and cheap cars use front disc and rear drums.

Not to mention that it is very difficult to generate the pressure needed with a cable actuated disc parking brake (hydraulics are very efficient). Drum brakes are much more efficient in that the designs lends a greater mechanical advantage on the shoes/pads and is better suited for cable actuation. Also, the design of drum brakes also makes them work better when parked facing uphill...most drum brake systems self adjust when you brake in reverse (remeber the star wheel?), the same effect is had when parked uphill with parking brake on. (make sense?)
