Painting an AEM CAI black?

If I used high temp black paint to paint the intake pipe would it hold up? I'm not sure if I should paint it or get it powder coated.

If I do paint the pipe, do I need to sand it first?

Any help would be appreciated since it would be my first time painting a car part.

Thanks in advance.

paint will be fine.

first, you should clean the pipe w/ wax and grease remover, or alchohol. then scuff the pipe with a red scotchbrite pad until it looks dull. wipe off the pipe again to get the dust off. apply the paint with light, even coats until it is covered, waiting in between coats for the paint to flash. follow the instructions on the can for drying time, etc.

i was assuming the pipe is not scratched up, and that you will be using spraypaint.

you could do this yourself but the question would be... WHY?

just take it and get it powder coated...

Thanks mattg for the help.

I think painting would be cheaper and it would take less time.

well painting may be cheaper but on such a nice car wouldn't you want things done by a pro? I mean we can't all be good at everything right? It couldnt' cost you more than $40 to go get it painted at a local shop. The time it takes for you to sand it down, paint a few coats, then run clear coat a few times wouldn't be worth it. Also, you should just do your engine cover and other cool stuff while you're at it and save yourself the time/money for something more worth it. I know you guys all work and your free time should be well spent.

Time = Money...

You're looking at a good 2 hour job painting that thing and waiting for coats to dry... then if yo uhave any mistakes you'll have to resand it all down and start over.

Plus isn't there advantages (heat wise) to having it powder coated or coated some special way (like jetcoat) to affecting your intake temperatures? It's a $200 piece of equipment. I wouldn't do a DIY paint job on it but that's just my opinion.

Sorry, i didn't mean to be an ass...

You weren't an ass.

I never thought about the performance aspect. Maybe I should just have a shop powder coat it. I don't see the difference in painting and powder coating though.
