Paddle shifters?
Paddle shifters?
A friend of mine had paddle shifters installed on his X5, I was wondering if it would be possible to get them for our autos? Some how tap into the sport shift...? Anyone try? Any Ideas?

Upgrading the X5 to paddle shifters involves using the SMG steering column and steering wheel and tapping the wire leads for the sport shift in the center column. It wouldn't appear that the paddle shifters from the RL would work (although if it did you'd be looking at quite a big investment). Not sure I'd want to mess around with anything that may push the already crummy transmission closer to death quicker.
but the e53 (X5) uses a lot of the componets from the 5 series. you can get the e60 (5 series) with paddle shifters; thus translating to a much easier base to perform such an action.

I know that my friend dropped a dime on them. And I can't see why you would make them rotate with the wheel. Paddle shifters are the best thing you can get for a shitty auto anyways. I'm not looking to do it, I was just wondering if anyone on here had, and how hard it was to do. Yes, It would be crazy $$$. And true I don't need another reason to replace my tranny.
Why would paddle shifters be good for an auto? You can already shift it manually with SS?
Paddle shifters/SS/auto stick etc are just a gimmick unless they are attached to a real SMG or simliar auto/maunal trans.
