optima battery
install shop killed my battery i guess...scumbags.
anyway i have to get a new battery today, considering spending double to get an optima yellow top.
anybody know a lot about batteries? is it worth the extra 75 or so dollars? I have two large amps running off it...

dry cell batteries are awesome...if you make sure you dont have a dark current somewhere. Also in colder weather they are a bit harder to crank...make sure you get something that is suited to handle your amps.
Im running a SVR battery and they took care of me when my SVR battery died (my fault). They shipped me a new one right away no questions asked. Look up their website and you can order direct from them.

Red top is MARINE (boating, jet ski) use i do believe....
There is Blue,Yellow and Red.... I looked into these when i was shopping for the R51 battery for the S/C'er.... they can be mounted any which way...(on the side,upsidedown,ect)... I did not have time to wait for one so I went with an INTERSTATE battery... Steve (Scalbert) helped me with the purchase...but you need something much larger than what I got... your just replacing the stock battery.... I have 1 for sale if you want it... it was used for a year.. shipping willl kill you, but I will part with it..

Optimas are gel cells. We used to use optimas on the equipment when I was in the Air Force, a very good battery, only the Ni-Cad's were better. There are several app's. for the optimas, I believe the yellow one is deep cycle , and the red is for general use.

well the noob hooked it up!
So yes, use the yellow top for high powered stereos.
On a side note. About a week ago somebody posted a link about the tzero electric car. That car uses 30 of them to power is electric motor. On a full charge you can go 90-100 miles!

Blue is a deep cycle battery. It is designed to provide a mid/low amp current for long periolds of time. (run a tolling motor, or power a golf cart for 5-6 hours)
Where as a normal car battery is designed to provide a burst of high amps for a short period of time. (turn starter motor for 5 seconds)
Deep cycle batteries are also designed to be discharged before recharging. Where as a normal automotive battery can be recharged before being fully discharged.
So, NO.
Would it start the car... yes. Depp cycle batterys need to be recharged differently than a normal battery for getting any long term use.

Well
If you know the right people (Your local battery guy), I am sure he can contact Optima or his suppliers and see about switching tops for you if you got the money.... but I dunno... Worth a try?.. maybe, but it is an option...

I have had the yellow top in my car for about 2 years now. It starts no prob everytime. Took it out of my old car and I have had no prob with all the stereo equipment. I think it was around 180 bucks but is well worth it IMO

They also have an orange top where the poles are reversed (+ where the - normally would be).

So how do people with systems and Yellow Tops wire their batteries. Is there something that they wire inline between the battery and the alternator that closes the circuit when a predetermined voltage is reached; ie begins charging when the battery is drained?

I didn't ask for blue, hell I didn't even ask for a new battery. the guys who installed my stereo just tossed it in there for me. It has worked fuckin perfectly so far though. I've left dome lights on all night, on a handful of occasions, car starts right up, no problem. Deep cycle, sheep cycle, seems to work for me.
