Which one of the big 3 will go under first?
#3
i voted gm but i doubt any are gonna go under. seems many americans have come to embrace the concept of buying sub par vehicles made in the USA...some sort of patriotic act apparently.

If none of them go under, I will be very surprised... Maybe I should change this to say, which one will require government intervention first.

will the F series, Silverado/Sierra, or Ram trucks ever stop being bought? No. americans buy american pick-ups like its in the bill of rights or something. and the big 3 make a killing off of them. Never gonna happen.

If any of the big 3 get into trouble, I'm sure Bush will help 'em out

With the incentives that Chevy is offering on their trucks it does look bad for 'em, but even with the discounts they are probably still making mad money. Ford new F150 probably doesn't help Silverado sales any
![Wink](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Part of Chevy's problem is that their trucks are ranked 3rd (behind ford and dodge), and the ecomony isn't helping. GM has a lot of new vehicles in the pipeline (C6, etc) that should help the bottom line.
The Big three have shown signs of making better and better quality vehicles in the past 5-10 years, and are striving to produce more "un-american built" vehicles. Don't count the big 3 out just yet

i seriously doubt gm is going under any time soon, lutz knows what hes doing
look at the success with caddy, and the new gto, new saab based on the wrx, etc
ford is also picking up their paces
i think chrysler is in a far 3rd, because even though they started making some decent cars the prices are way too high and nobody wants to buy them

I think any one of the three could go, but if they did, it would be in this order:
Ford, then DC or GM.
Why? Ford, with the exception of the GT and the new Mustang, the rest of their offerings are pure pablum. Lincoln is on the ropes.
DC has always had reliability issues, but offer relatively exciting products (but I can't afford the good ones.)
And GM is just about as bad as ford. I agree, the C6 and Caddy are good examples, but Oldsmobile is gone, and I figure Buick is next. Bland styling. Badge Engineering. I rented a Chevy something or other (see how much it impressed me?) in Ohio for a day trip, and all I could do was try to guess who made the pajama material that covered the seats. And with 8,000 on the clock, talk about warped brake rotors. wow. And who approved those stupid Pontiacs with the fake plastic side cladding? All that did was add cost, and increase the number of holes in the body, a great place for corrosion to start.
These are businesses guys! Now who has gone out?
MG.
Triumph.
Sterling.
Vauxhall.
Tucker.
Studebaker.
AMC.
I could name more, but you get the point.
What REALLY disappoints me, when I was at prime driving age, 18 in 1969, the scene was so exciting, especially at Chevy. The Z-28. SS/RS 396 cid 375 hp Camaro. 454 cid 450 hp Chevelle. And how I yearned for a Corvette! Now that I can afford one, I don't want one. Did you know the Corvette shares the steering wheel with, I think it's the Corsica? Call that Engineering? There was no place more exciting than the Chevy Dealer. Now I pass them up as a matter of routine.
We had GTO's, 442s, Road runners, the original Dodge daytona with that outrageous wing.
And not to pick nits, but the Big three these days is GM, Toyota and DC, I believe.
This is a new century, my friends. Stand still for five minutes in ANY area of manufacturing, well, expect to get run over!
As society changes, so must manufacturing to accomidate the needs. Anybody notice the "Big Three" of buggy whip manufacturers are now obsolete with the introduction of the car?
Whatever happened to Bell and Howell? And now Kodak is abandoning silver nitrate film manufacturing, save for disposable cameras. Times change.
A co-worker just bought a Toyota Prius. He has to wait five months to get it because demand is so high. People are getting fed up with paying $2 a gal (and I predicted $3 by summer in another forum). The car manufacturers who neglect this field will go by the wayside, believe me. It may be decades off, but it could happen.
OK, stepping off my soap box. I work in manufacturing, with a heavy emphasis on car parts/assemblies. It is truly cut throat.

Sweet as Gold
NONE...ford currently has and has had for the past 20 years the best selling vehicle of all time...the F150. They sold 650,000 last year alone..compare that to the 200,000 or so civics sold last year. DC has many car brands under their chain and will never go out as like GM. Plus u have to remember every police vechile, army vehicle, ambulance, work truck, etc..on the road is made by either Ford or GM

I only had my Ford in once to replace the belt tensioner at 58K miles. I got stranded on the highway that one time. I've had my tensioner replace on my Acura too already (as part of the "non-recall" recall
![Wink](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
I've had my CLS in a couple of times to replace the lower control arms on both sides on separate occasions (one trip required an overnight stay for the CLS) to repair "clunking noises". Let me tell ya', having scary noises coming from the front end suspension isn't fun
![Frown](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
Overall, I've had more problems with the CLS then with the Ford Tbird. That's with only 18k on the CLS vs. the 136K on the FORD. Sure the CLS hasn't left me stranded (yet), but it's a 30K car and not a 18K car.
Ford is alright by me. (Focked Over Rebuilt Dodge)

The only one of the 3 I had a bad experience with is DC. I've actually had much better luck with GM in my own experience than I've had with Honda / Acura. Not saying I'm the norm, but here's what has gone wrong with my 03 Accord EX so far:
-Ignition module had to be replaced as per dealer TSB
-Alternator replaced. Battery replaced by the dealer already

GM is too big of a monster to go down. Ford just slipped behind toyota ranking #2 in the world title (i think largest or most sales i dont remember) Im pretty sure GM supplies trannies for some bmws, opel, and some others.

Yeah foreign market definetly build better cars that handle better with more efficient and reliable engines .. but american companies build the best trucks and SUV's IMO. the Tundra and Titan will never outsell the F series, Ram, or Sierra\Silverado.

None. Besides, they'll just file for banktrupcy and start over. But Ford needs to turn it around quick. The Firestone fiasco killed them. The F-150 now has more competition then ever (they went 20 years not changing it before). THe nostalgia for the Mustang is shrinking. The Taurus is basically a rental car. The Focus is a great car but there is no profit in small cars. The Ranger is 100 years old. The WIndstar is average compared to the competition.
They are turning out some new great interiors though. This will help seperate them from GM and DC.

Toyota is the same place with trucks now that it was with cars not too long ago. I see them eventually dominating in the truck world as well. IMHO. Ford of the early 90s was good. I have a 93 probe that runs great... I think that engine will last forever... after ford2000 and aquiring Jaguar, Volvo, LR, etc... quality is sooooo crappy.

The Detroit 3's market share has been eroding away steadily but I don't think any of them will go away anytime soon. They are all still very strong in the full size truck/SUV market.
However due to their declining market share they cannot afford any high profile mistakes. None of them can afford any more blundered launches like DC's flubbed Pacifica launch.
