Oil question

I want to change my oil soon but I want to use synthetic but the last car I had it had been on regular oil its whole life and when we added synthetic the rear main seal started leaking. It might have been something else but I think thats what it was. So will using synthetic on a car that has been on regular oil its whole life create leaks? I just want to make sure so my new car will remain leak free.

mod edit: changed title from "question" to "Oil question". Having descriptive thread titles will get better answers (and thread views).

how many miles are on your CL? synthetic alone won't cause oil to leak

well Im not sure but I think the car came with synthetic from the factory.

are you looking for full-synthetic or are you gonna use a synthetic blend?

and just restating because im sure you know, that once you change to a full synthetic oil you cant use conventional oil again unless you want to mess up your engine

thats what i heard before too. one of the draw backs of using synthetic: cant go back to dino.

it shouldnt leak. if you want, you can make a more gradual change over buy using a synthetic blend for a few oil changes before going fully synthetic but i dont know if that will do anything.

advance auto is having a special right now on mobil 1. You can pick up 5qts + oil filter for 29.99 + tax. I went ahead and bought 3 sets of them.

I have a slight Rear Main Seal leak now. Kinda sucks but it doesnt really have any detrimental effects upon the car that I can see. Going to do clutch/flywheel in 10k or so, so i'm not worried.

Also when you make a new topic, please please please be a bit more descriptive with your title!!!!!!

Theoretically it shouldn't make a difference. But it isn't unheard of for engines with questionable maintenance histories to begin having oil leaks after switching to synthetic oil at a high mileage.

Generally, if the engine has been maintained properly it should not make a difference. If the maintenance is history is questionable, then I would proceed cautiously. Also, rear main seal leaks aren't uncommon on Honda V6 engines, regardless of oil used, if the engine has been poorly maintained.

There's no such thing. The only ATF-Z1 that is Honda approved is the one that you purchase at the dealership. This is because Honda does not have a fluid licensing program like GM, Ford and Chrysler.

However, Lubrizol, which is one of the largest additive suppliers, has a multi-vehicle additive package that has been bench and field tested extensively in a variety of popular applications, including Honda. Therefore, you'll find many over-the-counter multi-vehicle fluids that list Honda ATF-Z1 compatibility, but not approval.

The failures on the Honda transmissions do not appear to be fluid-related, so I would not be too concerned about the compatibility of the multi-vehicle fluids.

I kinda assumed that but as far as every thing else goes I want it to last as long as possible so I was thinking Synthetic.I used it in my last two cars a 95 maxima 5speed got rid of it at 430 000km (just put a clutch in at 210 000), a jeep cherokee 5.2 litre 498 000 trans at 190 000(synthtic after that, was hoping to get half a mill)By the way the trans was perfect in both of these.

So this is why I want to go synthic with my CL-SA.

I did put synthtic engine oil in the CL ,didnt notice a difference in longevity.

I put it in my 88 300zx(160 000 Km) and it totaly destoyed my gas milage

Just thought you guys might want to know some wierd things that happened to me with synthetic engine oil.

I like Valvoline a lot in regular oil. Also have had good experience with their "Dura Blend" synthetic mix.

as long as you maintain a good interval in your oil changes, there shouldnt be too much sludge.
If your car has over 75k, i, personally, would use a high mileage oil. My mom's camry was blowing out white smoke on cold starts and after a few oil changes of valvoline maxlife, it doesnt smoke anymore. theres 220700 on the engine right now.
