Oil consumption - POLL
Folks.
I've noticed with the turbo that as the oil gets worn down (i.e., less viscosity), oil consumption goes up a tad bit. Please answer the poll questions - doesn't matter if you are FI or NA.
I had little to no oil consumption while NA... maybe 1/4 of a quart in 3000-4000 miles. I now see little to no consumption the first 1500 miles (new oil) and then about 3/8 of a quart around 2500-3000 miles. I am pretty sure the 'hot' oil-cooled turbo has something to do with this, but would like to understand the normal oil consumption of this motor.

Just check it. Haven't lost a drop. It's probably been about 2k miles and 4 months since my last change. Looking a little dark and thick, better change it soon.

i see very little oil consumption if any, never really payed attention to it, but a turbo probably breaks that oil down over time. i'm n/a for your reference

No lie I'm at 190,000 miles now and STILL don't use any between 8K mile changes. I've always used Mobil 1 or Amsoil. Still NA though. This is a great motor in my book.

Three oil changes to date on the S/C'er and no abnormal consumption. I use Castrol conventional oil. I've heard from other S/C'ed owners using synthetic were burning up way too much oil.

I'm slightly higher than the middle of the two dots. I run hard though. Hit at least 100 once a day. It's been about 5K since I've changed my oil. Running Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30 and only had the thermalblock spacers on for 300 miles. Good thing I checked now. It's looking a shade brown but not thick and nasty which is good! Hope this helps...

Another S/C'ed CL-S was running Synthetic 5w-20 and was 2 quarts down after 3,000 miles.

On the other topic, maybe I'll try 10w30 or 10w40 <= does that exist? I know 20w50 exists.
First thing is to try standard Castrol 10w20 as mrsteve recommended.

I PM'd him... so either you let me know or he will get back to me. Basically I want to know:
i. What oil was he using and what he switched to (brand name, weights etc.)
ii. How much oil was he burning and what it reduced to
iii. Is the stop of oil-loss can be attributed solely to the type of oil... did he do anything else to the motor?

Looks like derelict's issue is not the type/weight of oil, so I will just try a thicker blend. In any case most folks are little/no to little/half-quart.... so given that I have a turbo application, I should be okay. I'll do more detailed measurements with the next oil change and probably plot it to understand if it really is viscosity and/or age dependant.

It's been my experience that Hi-performance, S/C and turbo motors have always used a heavier weight oil. Not sure why, but suspect that the higher pressures generated in these engines will have greater blow-by potential with a lighter weight.
Also, for those with NA motors, I'd be concerned why their engines are showing coolant/oil use after installing the thermoblock. It really shouldn't do this unless there's a design and or installation issue here.

Oil consumption got a lot to do with how you drive your car. If you race/rev your engine more often, your engine will consume more oil. I know you drove your car harder after the turbo, I know I did after my Supercharged! All those testing, reving and etc, cause your engine to burn more oil.
I run the $hit out of mine . . . it sees redline everytime I drive it (1st & 2nd, and even 3rd sometimes) and it still uses no oil.

I probably run the car hard less often with the turbo than I did while NA. I did not notice any oil-loss while NA. However given the stress, heat etc. with the turbo, I am sure that the effect (although less often) is more pronounced. Anyways, I had power3dfx follow me last night while flooring it and there was no oil-burning (white smoke) out of my exhaust, so I feel better. Keep in mind that the turbo has hot flowing in/around hot exhaust... some of it is bound to burn off.

I went to Acura once thinking my car was consuming lots of oil, they said it would be perfectly normal to put in a quart in between every oil change. I though it might be the rear engine seal leaking (cause I saw some oil soak under the car), but that wasn't the case either. I have done two oil changes after the fact and my oil levels have not changed, go figure. Btw, I use 5w-30 Mobil-1 syn.

Are you laughing because we aren't using oil like they do? or because you don't really know why many of us don't use oil and laughing about it better than crying about it?
If I'm not mistaken, those cars can over rev while ours have rev limiters . . .or could it be that those engines are not as tight as these and therefore would experience greater blowby at higher rpms . . . it could be because the 6900rpm redline is not high enough to result in this . . . if I could I would have no problem running it to 7200-7400 as I redline it everytime I drive it . . . shoot, I used to run my SS V8 over 7,000rpm all the time . . . and it didn't use oil either . . .
There are a lot variables that could be causing this . . . and each case could have a different issue . . .

I guess being the car is over 2 years old and I have 14,000 miles on it has something to do with it... or, I just do not pay attention.... or I like wasting money and change my oil every 3500 miles or 3 months.
... but that is the way I was schooled by my father who has been wrenching for over 30+ years.

I got over 30,000 on mine and nothing . . . I do go longer on the full oil change these days (6 months or 7500), but I change the filter in between . . . I also do a filter change before every track event . . . unless it's close to needing a full . . . then I change the filter after the event . . .
I ran that 64 Malibu SS for 8 yrs . . . raced it . .. pulled a boat, yes a boat, went on road trips where I averaged 115mph from Waco to Austin, 100 miles, redline was 7,600rpm . . . with a V8. . . and it was as clean as a

It was a small journal 327 that I had built for the street (blue printed by some old racers for 10,000 rpm) . . it had a 292 dur with 502 lift . . . hydraulic cam . . 10.5-1 comp, Victor Jr intake, 780 vac sec Holly, Infrared ignition, drag built turbo350 tranny with 2800rpm stall, narrowed 12 bolt posi . . 308s at first, then 411s . . . everything was matched . . that thing would scream . . . actually hit 8,000rpm once . . not sure about the HP, never had it dynoed. Ran mid 13s with street tires . . . because traction sucked . . with cheater slicks I ran low 12s . . . but with the 308 . . . never ran with the 411 and slicks . . .
it was a little beast . . . rip your hands off the wheel . . . put daylight under the front tire as it torqued . . . ah, V8 power
I remember beating a guy in a Vette while I had 3 of my buddies in it and boat in tow . .. that was fun . .. sigh
