oh no power steering!!

So my hose coming off the pump sprung a 'leak'... Basically I'm going through aboot a bottle of this stuff a day which isnt good for the pump and its left a nice shinny greasy power steering fluid smelling coating under my hood.

I can't afford to have the hose changed quite yet so basically what I was wondering was if I take the belt off and run it without power steering for half a month how bad would that be? I'm already assuming not very good but I want that confirmed before I completely wash that idea. Also its the high pressure hose that goes from the pump right to the rack behind the engine. Has anyone ever changed this hose before, and how hard is it? If anyone had the helms manual on the DIY that would be awesome.

The high pressure hose you speak of, is it #4 on the link below?

http://www.acuraoemparts.com/delray/...All&vinsrch=no

If so, then there is no specific uninstall/reinstall procedure in the Helms. It (Helms) just displays/names the #4 hose as 'PUMP OUTLET HOSE' with a torque spec for the two bolts (#28) at the pump as 8.0 lbf-ft.

It should be a straight forward repair, except in your case there will be the extreme element of fluid being all over the place. Clamp down on all of the connectors first, maybe one has loosened over time, that is unless you can actually see where the leak is comming from while the engine/pump is on.

Good Luck.

ya #4 is the part.
The leak is coming from a crack in the hose right after the pump.

^^ Good advice on the install.
I can comment on running no power steering. About a year and half ago my pump blew up. I heard an awful screeching and lost steering, popped the hood to find my belt had jumped off. Put it back on and still had no steering, and all my fluid started foaming out of the reservoir. I ended up just living with it until I got a cheap replacement pump from a friend. Drove it for more than 6 months throughout the summer. No problems to speak of. Other than having to "man power steer" lol
Popped in a new pump and it's been all good ever since. I was nervous the rack was going to fail if it ran dry, but it didn't.

so what your saying is that if I run it without the powersteering hooked up it wont cause damage in the short term? Because if thats the case I'll just take the belt off until I can fix it and "man power steer" my way through it!

If I'm not mistaken, there are two wrecked second gen cl's being parted out in the black market. Won't hurt to throw some offers in your price range for a part I wouldn't see being on top of everyones list to buy. If not then you can try the j32 website in their market section.

Best of luck.

I wouldn't say that. He lucked out, is your luck that good? Running the rack dry will lead to rack failure. And from experience that's a $800 job with labor.

Fuzzy's right I got lucky. I wouldn't recommend driving without power steering for too long. If my rack fails in the next few years I'll know why. on the other hand p/s delete is a common mod with drag and race cars to shed weight and they don't seem to be worried too much about it.

No PS on a PS rack is painful.

I know people that had PS racks in EGs would loop the lines and leave fluid in it. That way it still has lubrication. But the ratios are still setup for PS and its a bitch to drive. My first car had a manual rack and I honestly miss it. It was a light car and wasn't that difficult to turn when parking. It communicated a lot more then the PS rack in the CL does.

^^ the amount weight makes a difference with regards to how hard it is to steer feels exponential. at least so it seems.

my company mdx just went through the p/s pump and when i was driving it into my bay to put it on the hoist it was incredibly hard to steer.. i mean full out yanking like my life depended on it.

Wanna see wheat it's like to drive without PS? Put the car in neutral on a slight downhill grade and shut the car off by turning the key to ACC. It gets easier to turn as the car moves faster but parking would take forever.

I can see people missing the little step where you turn the car to ACC, and instead turning it completely off and locking their steering wheel

Good point.

You should probably change out all the O-rings in the pump too. If you haven't done so already it should cost like $15-$25 from the dealership. It depends if they give you special pricing. I paid ~$13 for 6 or 7 new o rings that are in the pump and to the lines.

Do that once you have the new HP hose attached. I wouldn't recommend driving without PS, it's just too dangerous.
