Is this offset too low??

I'm looking at these used rims. They're 18x8 with a 38mm offset. The tires are 225/40/18. Not sure exactly what offset means. Searched this forum and all those technical terms on offset is foreign to me. Can someone tell me if this rim will fit on a cl-s? Thanks for your help guys.

Langjae,

I am afraid 38mm offset will at least be flushed with your fender, if not sticking out beyond. If you are lowered, then it will rub.

You ideal offset is close +48.
With 18x8 and 225/40 a +42 would probably
work. But, you should stay away from anything lower (lower = sticking out of fender).

I stuck your offset into the tire calc.

If you went with the 38 offset wheels vs. the common place +48 offset wheels, you would have the outside lips sticking out almost 1/2" of an inch more than the +48 offset 8" wheels.

The 8" wheels and tires are already out about 1" more than stock, so going to the +38 would make the tire and wheel combo stick
out about 1.4 inches.

I think the other comments about the +44 and +48 for the 8" rim are correct.

I have 7.5' width rims with a 42 offset and the are .45" inside the wheel well. Keep in mind the the difference between a 38 and a 48 offset is only 10 mm or about 1/3 of an inch. Not 1.5" as someone said.

He is looking at the 8" wheels, so the 1/2" goes somewhere (inside, outside, or inside-and-outside).

I will use your setup as the base line -- 17x7.5" wheels, 48 offset, and 0.45" of fender room (ok?)

1. I'm going to add .25" outward. I now subtract this .25" from your .45". There is now .2" of fender clearance (yes/no?)

2. The offset he mentioned is +38 vs your +48, so the wheel lip moves outboard by 10mm (10/25.4) approx = .4".

So, if there is only .2 of fender clearance with an 8" wide wheel at +48, then it seems that the .4" increase from the offset will push the wheel .2" inches outside the fender wall, based on your observations.

So, wouldn't the +38 offset be problematic as FDao and others have said?

You said you only have .45" clearance. So, if you add the .65" increase, minus your .45" clearance, he is .2 outside the fender.

Haven't tried it, but it sounds pretty tight.

See above -- I think this will help and hope it is clear enough. You will probably be ok if you really want those wheels bad enough, but I think you will have fender run based on the clearance provided by "MilPaint".

I used his fender clearance data. Then added the width of the 8" vs 7.5" then added in the difference in offset (38 moves the wheel farther out than 48).

Hope this helps. I am assuming that his fender data is correct.

(best I could come up with)
