Thumbs down Obscures The View

Quite a number of times I've looked right or left before pulling out onto a street. Seeing no oncoming traffic, I made my move, only to discover that I was about to bend the metal with someone. I finally realized that it wasn't my fault, but that of my CLS. Turns out, the front door pillar is wider than the spacing between your eyes, and if a person, motorcycle, or even another car is in the right place, they can be invisible for a moment. To add insult to injury, the side mirror and the built-in speaker obscure even more of the view. Drop your sun visor, and you see a lot less of the field of view in front. Both visors, double trouble. Try it. The door pillars and mirrors on my Lexus LS400 are considerably smaller, and block a lot less of the view. Best to look twice before making any move.

I have noticed that the a-pillars are a bit thick also. I havent had any close calls, but I could see how someone who just glances quickly could miss a car that was in the exact right spot.

I look both ways so much before a turn as it is, my neck is starting to look like Schwartzennegers.

I always rock back and forth a bit and look around the a-pillar, in every car. There's always a chance somebody's hiding back there.

I agree that the CL has probably the best visibility of any car I've driven. Next time you're in a parking lot, look around and see how many cars you can find with more glass than you've got... You'll be pleasantly surprised.

more than one occasion that has happened to me, and resulted in a near miss with a pedestrian a few years back. only thing i dislike about the car.

guess your driving position/style determines if you have these problems?!

i think you need to adjust your side mirrors better to pick up the blindspot. i have mine to perfection.

Same here.

Try to drive the new Durango, or most Dodge trucks. That A-pillar is HUGE!

Eh? Side mirrors aren't going to help in this case. He's referring to the A-pillar between the door and the windshield, its the same in the TL, it blocks your vision in that one spot and sometimes when you look left or right it looks like nothing is there, its especially bad at night when you sometimes can't see the car you just see headlights.

I agree though, I just try to be more cautious ... when I'm in a rush though its bitten me once or twice but luckily I've been fast enough on the brakes that nothing bad happened.

i've noticed this, the pilars are oversized and so is the dumbo ear-side mirros.... but i have since adjusted, i just move my head to where i can see all areas... compensate my friend...

plus i have tinted windows @ night a lot of times i have to roll my shit down just so i can see if there are pedestrians in the crosswalk

If I was a pedestrian near your car, I would run thinking a gun is gonna pop out that CL.

I noticed that too. But I just sit up a bit more when I'm making a turn to be sure I see clearly. I'm looking into the 03 mirrors, but I haven't seen it as that much of an issue yet.

I've never really had an issue with blindspots to the left or right.

I have noticed when driving on a road that curves to the left that the A-piller will briefly obscure the road ahead, but that's it.

I've never noticed this at all; after driving the '90 Celica for 13 years, the CLS is a treat from a visibility perspective.

I wonder if height is an issue?

As much as i love my CL, i've noticed the huge block from the mirrors and pillars too. I look 2-3 times for cars and pedestrians before i turn because the area blocked by the pillars ends up being like....3 meters of visibility

If you think the CL is bad then check out the new TL. As much as I love the car I can't get over how thick the A pillars are, but that's what they have to do in order to install air bags in them.
