NTSB Reconsidering legal use of HID's

The news here in Joisey last night reported that the NTSB had received thousands of letters complaining about the "new" HID lights. The complaints centered around the glare and brightness. I can't believe that they would reverse the legality of these lights since almost 60% of new cars have them now. Your government at work!

A much more wise move would be to mandate leveling and washer systems to lessen glare. I still can't believe Acura hasn't implemented such systems. I'll tell you, I get a lot more High beam flashes in my Acura than I do in my dad's MINI w/ autolevel.

The new "projector" HID's seem much better. From the side they don't look bright at all, but from the driver's seat the light output is the same if not better than ours. I really liked the TSX's projectors.

No, they were talking about new cars not retrofitted cars. I am trying to find something on NTSB's website. The aftermarket ones are already "illegal"

People just need to get used to it. It is obviously the way the industry is headed. What are they going to do... recall the millions and millions of cars that have HID lights and install old-school hallogen bulbs? I think not. Nothing will come of this.

He's right they were talking about OEM hids, I forget what mag I was reading but they said that some agency's were trying to get the car manufactures to recall cars and replace the lights with less offencive lights. I will be highly pissed if this ever goes through

Oops = Mrsteve beat me too my statement about recalls, but I did read it in a mag I just don't remember which one

If these people cant deal with headlights they shouldnt drive at night. HIDs are here to stay. I find SUVs with windshield level halogen headlights to be more offensive than HIDs on cars.

Maybe we should start complaning about SUV's and cars with improperly aimed halogens that are just as blinding. You will never find anyone with a HID equiped car complain about the lights, its just the people that wish they could have them

Yeah the only lights i'm ever bothered by is the ones coming off large SUV's. Have the NTSB start there.

It's just ignorant people seeing a whiter light and thinking they are seeing brights. In the city I never get flashed. When I go back to my podunk home town it seems that every other car has to flash there brights at me.

I dont see the point in the high beam flashing. I have a first gen with 80W arctic whites and I get it all the time even though they arent that bright. They are aimed very low as well. Its like what am I gonna do, go home and install dimmer headlights because you flashed your lights at me?

Want to coment?

Got this info from consumer reports:

GoTo http://dms.dot.gov
pick "comment/submission" button
the glare-docket id number is 8885

Or call 888-327-4236

Maybe you should tellem HID's should only be allowed to be mounted at the lower heights used by cars. SUV's etc that have lights mounted higher should not be allowed to HID's. That sure would trigger some new designs at ford/gm/etc I bet.

The Acura's are my first car with HID's & I'll never get another car without them. I see so much better on these dark ass FL roads where street lights don't exist.

Agree with the SUV's they blind me all the time.
Also alot of ricer cars with blue bulbs who can't aim them suck too. That's where this is coming from I'd bet.

HID lights

WE all need to take a minute to formally complain about the consideration of banning the HID lights. I just did on the NTSB site.
That is the only way to stop it. The complaints come from a lot of older un-informed people who see something new and don't understand it.
People also complained when "halogen" lights first came out.
People thought THEY were too bright. But there was no internet available to make it easy to complain.
So they got used to them. Then they became "normal" lights for cars.
We all need to let OUR voice be heard!

i'm speachless... i bet most of the people that commented won't know hids if they bit them in the ass. i drive a lot at night, mostly on highways and was never bothered by hids. most of the time it's improperly adjusted halogens on cars and trucks as well as ricer boys that are a problem.

That is fucking ridiculous! SUVs are by far the most annoying lights on the road so these fuckers should be banned from use also if HIDs are. I will not go back to driving a car without HIDs. There is such a difference between seeing in my wife's accord and my TLS. If such a recall is done, which I know is highly unlikely, I will refuse.

This has got to the AARP crowd. Just cuz they drive around in 1980 Buicks and won't ever own a car with HIDs they want to make them illegal. Another problem I see are ricers with their cheap aftermarket HID kits.

Ok I did a little legwork on this hot topic .Seems the real issue is not banning them however rewriting the rules so that less glare can be accomplished .Glare is a solvable problem .Aftermarket HID retrofit kits have been banned .There is no attempt being made to kill HID factory lighting only a rule change to bring in some comntrols over how the light can be made to be less of a glare problem .

Oh man!! I wish the folks that complain would get a grip. Like any technology, it has to develop: regular lights (incandescents?)> Halogen > Halogen projectors > HIDs > HID projectors > ??? .
