Is this normal?
When I try to connect one of the battery terminals (i forget whether it was positive or negative) is it supposed to spark? To the best of my knowledge that isn't supposed to happen right.
Yeah, it happens. It happens all the time on any electrical device where there's an initial physical connection (eg a light switch). Just that most of the time, the spark is so tiny that human eyes don't see it.
If memory serves, what you're seeing is that little split second where you have just initiated contact, and all that current is flowing thru a very very tiny area. This creates a very large buildup of heat in that tiny cross section, and hence you see sparks.
Think of it this way. Let's say you have a garden hose and you clamp your hands on the outlet so that no water goes through. If you were to open your hands very slowly, you see a moment where the water just sprays out due to high water pressure and small outlet. Then as you allow the outlet to get larger by relaxing your hands, the water doesn't spray out as much.
Not a very good analogy but the best I can come up with now.
