noob excitement right here

for the first time since getting my car, I finally had the balls and empty enough street to finally play a bit. Never really pushed the car yet.

So I pull up to a light. No one around. 12:30am. All is quiet.

I turn off TCS, wait for green then gun it!

Screeeeeccchhhh....I look in rearview and saw two (not one) nice long black tire marks in the pavement

After I saw that, I realized that we have LSD in the CL-P? Thought it was only the CL-S ?

Please forgive this noob for not knowing.

PS, please keep in mind that my previous car was a first gen 4cyl auto altima. I was lucky to maybe chirp the tire a bit when flooring it from a stop.

sure you can. cl-p's have the "TCS" button like the cl-s has the VSA button, and both can be turned off.

Yeah the 6spd only has LSD, however I have an 03 CLS auto and I've felt both tires spin before. Sometimes only the passenger, sometimes only the driver .. I know in my old Explorer, no matter what ONLY the passenger side would spin. How does it work in the CLS? Whichever one loses traction first will spin?

I think the 5AT has a viscous type LSD. One trip down the 1/4 mile, with VSA off, the front end drifted quite a bit to the left as both tires went up in smoke.

you can get both tires to spin ,but one wil take over..the one with least traction...if both have no traction i think you'll see 2 lines...and it will even switch back and fourth during a burnout....i will be providing video of this soon..(next track event) a burnout that in the words of some will bring tears to the eyes of top fuel guys every where

The 2001 CLS service manual just shows a plain old open diff inside the transaxle case....

Eric, if that was the case would it be impossible for both tires to spin at the same time?

LSD - limited slip differential

VSA - vehicle stability assistance

Mine is an 03 TL-S, and I'm not sayin it has it, I'm just saying I was heading for the wall at the launch. I stayed on the gas thinking it would pull out of it, but after drifting the width of the car, I had to let off or it would have been real bad.

Nice its always fun to open the car up for the first time to see what it can do.

I never leave tire marks however.

On good pavement, my car always spins both tires. In shitty traction, only the right tire spins.

I've seen patches from open diffs that were not "dead" even, but were not just from one wheel. My Bimmer, before it got a limited slip would leave "patches" that were sometimes pretty even depending on the "phase of the moon." -- and road surface However, on anything even remotely slippery (concrete, etc), one wheel would spin like crazy (as expected).

So, IMO, not impossible.

YMMV

Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, after spinning their tires people are often found licking the pavement and being paranoid later.
