Coming back from lunch, pulled behind an S4.

Bad thing is he's loaded with two passangers.

Sure enough, light turns green and he hauls ass. I follow. Once I passed (very easily) I pulled on every gear until we shut off at aroung 120 mph (still in third).

Had to stop on a bend before heading into traffic (noon on Topanga Canyon North-bound). Tires squealed (some lateral motion) until I stopped. VSA must have come on a few times.

Looked over, and gave him a thums up! I could not read his response as his tint was too dark.

Hands still shaky, but loved it...

I want to run the S4 again!

I don't know if you should "not respect S4" due to you beating a bad driver. My buddy has one and in stock form I had a hard time catching him on the highway in my 540, he's not modded up the wazoo so I don't even try.

I doubt it very highly. Once he gets out of 1st the S4 should own the CLS, but this is just my opinion. Never drove auto S4, but stick S4 are fast.

In reguards to a manual S4 your definately right. However Audi lists the Tiptronic at 6.5 sec 0-60. Thats right on par with the CLS.
And a definate waste of 40 grand. IMO

I have no idea whether it was a stick or not. I know it wasn't a re-badged S4, as the performance was there!

Either way he was lunch! Maybe it was due to him having two passangers onboard. I know the S4 has better 0-60 times than us. However, this does not mean that they are not beatable, as I proved last Friday.

I would expect a lot more from a twin turbo V-6. Aren't they just pushing 250 horses.

What a waste of 40 G's For that much I'd opt for a GS400, or a good used Porsche!

So a car that does 0-60 in 6.5 is a waste? The S4 is built solid as granite and in the twisties is a gerat place to be for you, some luggage and a couple of buds. Plus it looks great. Not a waste of 40k IMO.

Too bad a stock S4 is faster than a GS400 and would roast it on the track. They "only" push 250 hp because they run extremely low boost. That's why with 3k in mods S4s run 12s. I'd like to see a CL-S hit 12s. You beat the driver, not the car.

I'm not too sure about built like granite!

In my view, Audi has a lot more to do to make up for all those dissastruous 5000's, and 90's that they produced.

Image is a hard commodity to come by, and Audi is not there yet.

As far as looks go, Audi is not atop of my list. Specially not the A4/S4 series. I'm sure they will evolve into something better (hopefully).

I'm not really bashing the S4 here! Maybe the turbo's were having a bad day!

Yeah okay man... may I remind you you drive an Acura? Audi is consistently paralleled to MB and BMW. Their 3 lines of cars are always at the top of their respective classes. Audi dominates Lemans and the S4 won the GT cup in a field of NSXs, C5s, and E46 M3s. Believe what you want, but facts are facts.

My buddy's S4 has some Giac X chip, downpipe, exhaust, turbo timer, and so on and so on...This car is freakin fast!

A waste of 40k? What on earth are you guys talking about? I'll spare you guys the cold hard facts (AWD, Bi-turbo, etc..). Just go and drive one. Even an automatic, which I think is still faster than a CL-S. An S4 is one of the best values out there, and is a steal if you can get one for about 36-37k. Throw in a chip and the 6 speed, and the S4 with my 12 year old sister driving will smoke a CL-S. Anyone saying an S4 is a waste of 40k hasn't driven one, let alone sat in one. All this coming from a proud CL-S owner!

And as for the image thing, I think Audi is almost there. It builds some of the best looking cars IMO. The TT was revolutionary, and after a few years, is still is. A6 are also beautiful, but looks are subjective. AWD, exceptional quality, awesome interiors, and great warranties/service are not. Audi is up there with MB and BMW, perhaps passing Lexus along the way.

I like Audi, I realy do. The interiors are top notch (though not sporty enough for me) and the exteriors don't show enough emotion for me. But they are bland in a very good way. I can see myself pushing an S8 for instance.

AC, your bud has a great car, love those SSRs.

And Audi Ace, the GS can be modded too. Very few people, Lexus and other car owners alike know this.....

I agree with both 1SickLex and AudiAce. As a owner of a 540, I feel that only the GS is a true competitor and the E Class being a bit higher and don't see the A6 as "in the bunch" although Audi's interior kicks serious ass, best looking of the bunch IMO.

The Audis are with no doubt a Luxury marque in the market with MB, BMW and Lexus.

I would actually take the A8 over the 740, LS430 and S430 after having driven all 4, the Audi felt the most "confident" to me, with the exception the 740's handling...something about those bimmer's handling ability.

Yes, I drive an Acura CL Type S. I considered Lexus IS300, BMW 330Ci, I did not even bother looking at the Audi's. The best option for me was to go with the Acura, and I love it.

Nice car. But don't overestimate the auto. It has even more parasitic drain from the tranny than the manual and it is comparatively a slug. Notice, I don't say the 6spd isnt quick, just the auto isnt fast. And cold hard facts are that AWD is useless if you dont drop the clutch at the right rpm...waaaay too much drain on the motor's resorces.... and bi turbo just means it runs out of breath faster, this is of course in 1/4 mile terms...
It is an excellent road racing car, but anything RWD is gonna eat it up in most cases. You should really think about what you write before you write it.

Will post some numbers , not gonna get into the other part of this.
Stock Tip S4 runs 6.3-6.5 0-60mph, its the first 60' that kills it usually a 2.2-2.3 60' time. After that it goes pretty good. They run best of 14.6 1/4 mile and average 14.7, 14.8. At Pomona awhile back (the last day of street drags Sept 2000) temp was 90 degrees and stock tip ran 14.8@94mph, I have the splits and the timeslip but i am computer illiterate and cant post it.
CL-S is real competitive with this and it would be a drivers race. And I think a Stock GS4 would most likely eek out a win over both most of the time. And I am using a time of ~14.5 for the GS4.

Stock 6 speed, boy that one really depends I have seen them do 13.9 all the way up to 15's!!! LOL. Most run 14.2-14.5.

Stock Tip A6 2.7T - 14.9-15.1
Stock A6 2.7T 6 speed - 14.3 best and avg of 14.5-14.6's All timeslips

Stock Tip would get beat by the CLS and GS4
Stock 6 speed should beat a CLS and GS4, but with the GS only if the guy shifts real good. THe S would be more consistent.

I didnt mention chips since that has too many varibles.

Cost the CL_S is a great bargain,
S4 ran around 39-40k
GS 1sicklex will have to say, maybe ~48-54k??
A6 2.7T 40k-46k depending on options.

Oh yea, these numbers are taking into account no heat soak, which is a big hit on a turbo engine in regular street driving/sitting at a light.

You should really try to understand what I said rather than quote me out of context. AWD is useless? In what way? Road racing, ya maybe, but thats not what I'm talking about. The point I tried to make is that the S4 is a helluva car for 40k. I never tried to make the S4 a race car, which it is not, and neither is any car you can buy out of a showroom. Draining a motor's resources? Are we talking about the same things here? Maybe YOU should really think about what you write before you write it.

Well, my car got rearended by a Police Car about a month ago, I'm still trying to get that fixed.
My 19 inch Hamanns are coming off cuz I'm trying to sell them and probably sell the 540 altogether in about 2 months. Don't quite know what I'm gonna replace with...although I heard the RS6 with 450HP is coming to the states in early 2003 That should be FUN!...can you say M5 Killer?

I never said my 12 year old sister could pull 12s. I said she'd smoke a CL-S, which is very feasible. Stock S4s can run in the high 13's, let alone a chipped one. I never claimed a chipped S4 and a 6-speed can turn in 12's. Like you said, it takes a little more skill than that, and I agree, that is a fact. Oh and by the way, as a proud owner of a CL-S, I'm one of you CL guys. I'm just defending an S4, which certainly isn't a waste of 40k.

The facts are...the S4 is faster than CLS. Why is that so hard to accept. 6spd S4's do low 14's all day long while the CLS is straining to hit high 14's as I've seen more 15's slips than 14's.

I'm just not an Audi man, especially not the old A4 model.
The S4 is fast from 0-100kmh but that's about it.
It seems the Quattro kill's some power because I smoked a few in a severe manner which surprised me.
My car is no dragger but from 90 kmh up it really launches and can make up the loss from 0-100 before I reach 120 kmh.
What I don't like about the Audi is that it is 100% Volkswagen technology, like VW, Seat and Skoda, and way overpriced.

Maybe because I live in Europe and see them a lot, don't know.
I think the picture represents my feelings for this car in the right way :-)
