New Race - Lexus

Driving back from work today, I was at a red light. There are 2 lanes and a third lane where cars usually park. A car pulls next to me illegally in that lane and revs his engine. I really couldn't catch what car it was since it was so close to me, but I decided, what the heck. Well, I launch very well. he does too. Pulls slightly ahead of me until my V-TEC kicked in. At this point it was dead even. Stayed that way until about 70mph when we both shut it down.

In all my years of racing, I have never been in a race where the cars were do close. Our doors were literally lined from about 30mph on. I have to say I am very proud of my car lately. It seems to make MUCH more power whenever the weather is cold and I am less than a 1/4 tank.

I am sure you are asking what car it was. Well... It turned out to be a black Lexus GS400. Not the 430, but a 400.

BTW, Shalom... DO NOT pull out the BS flag. I would not waste any of your time by posting BS. I only tell you what happened.

Jeez I believe you! An older GS400 is totally believeable to 70mph with a good launch. If it was a 430 you would have lost. No BS

I agree. If it was the 430, I almost certainly would have lost. I am just very suprised and pleasently happy that my car was able to make such a good run. I bet that guy in the Lexus was suprised!!

I don't want to get on anyones bad side here but i dont know how you beat that GS400! My dad has a 1998 GS400 the beast has a 300HP V8. Im not sure exactly what year it was but it was voted fasted sedan that year.. in either motor trend or car and driver.. not sure.. im not to sure on how much HP your car has but im sure its not 300HP. Well i hope your not lyin and you truly did beat this GS400 but i seriously find it hard to believe the car does 0-60 in 5.8sec

I am not making this up. I call it like it happened. First of all, Magazine times mean nothing. I drove my friends GS400, and it is not THAT fast. Definitely would give the CL a good race though.

BTW, I never said I BEAT him. I said I stayed even with him. I knew I could probably never beat that car, but I was pleansantly suprised my car was able to keep even with it

I believe it. Our cars can definitely stick with a GS400.

You lucky dog you. Nice kill!

I've been trying to find a GS400 to run for over 2 months now to see just how we really stack up, but no victim yet. Some day and POW, I'll get me a GS400 badge for my fender.

The GS430 has a 4.3L engine as opposed to the older 4.0L of the one I raced. They both have 300hp, but the 4.3 has more torque lower in the rev range. I believe it also has improved variable valve timing in that engine. In real life, I heard it is a little faster. Not a huge difference but probably would have beaten mine

I was also looking to race one of these for a LONG time. I work with a guy who has one, and always talks smack about how fast his car is, but never wants to try to race me. Most of these cars are driven by old men or women, but finally I got my chance. Now I finally can talk some smack back to this guy!

I dunno guys, I always believe most race stories but I dunno....because I have a GS 400 and my best bud has a brand new CL-s. We race each other all the time cause we are crazy like that. I had him is ASS each and every time. I do admit, the CLs is very fast , but not GS 400 fast, I leave him at 5mph and he never catches up......

After 110 mph forget about it....

And for the record the GS 400 (0-60 in 5,7 sec) is faster than the GS 430 (0-60 in 5.8 sec) because the GS 400 has e-shift (I can maually select 2-5 gears on the steering wheel) and the GS 430 lost this wonderful item. Both cars are rated at 300 hp the 400 has 310 lbs torque and the 430 has 325 lbs torque..

Just my 2 cents

For the last time... I did not make this story up. Who knows. All I know is that what happened is how I described it. Maybe he had a slower GS400. Maybe my car was running especially strong that day. All I know is that we were even.

And for the record the GS 400 (0-60 in 5,7 sec) is faster than the GS 430 (0-60 in 5.8 sec) because the GS 400 has e-shift (I can maually select 2-5 gears on the steering wheel) and the GS 430 lost this wonderful item. 5.7 seconds? That's total BS. Where did you see that? Secondly, the GS430 IS faster than the GS400. An extra 15lbs of torque does make a difference.

That is not total BS you obviously must not know what your talking about.. my dad has a GS400 and it does have triptronic transmission.. you can maunaly shift the gears on the steering wheel.. and yes the GS400 is faster that a GS430.. it is THE SAME ENGINE.. GS430 has a little more torque.. call your local dealer and see.. the GS400 is faster and will beat the GS430..the GS430 simply has more options to it..

First of all, I was not saying that the GS430's lack of a tiptronic transmission was BS. I said that it's ability to go 0-60 in 5.7 seconds was BS. I have seen anywhere from 5.9-6.4. On the street, it can vary differently, but I have never seen a stat of 5.7.

Having a Tiptronic transmission does not make up for 15lb/ft less of torque.

And, yes.. My friend's father has a GS430, so I do know what I am talking about

Look buddy maybe you forgot but before the Jag XJR and the M5 the GS 400 was the FASTEST ACCELERATING AUTOMATIC SEDAN IN THE WORLD. That was in 1998, Motor Trend and Car and Driver got it to go 0-60 in 5.7 sec (and I am not a huge fan of magazine quotes). A GS 430 can do the 1/4 mile in under 13.9 secconds too!

I did not say u made the story up and I was not trying to flame, just giving you a REALITY CHECK!

I am a Lexus nut but also a CAR nut so I know what I am talking about.......

Have a nice day!

I am too a car nut, and I also know quite a lot about the GS400. I was just trying to say that from my real world experience, it seems that the magazine times you quoted seem a little off. I don't know what the guy was doing in our race, but all I know was that I was dead even with him, and going 70mph on a 35mph road indicates he was trying to race.

I personally like the GS400...

How does the same engine have different output on these cars?

Tune? Exhaust setup?

if you read this right, he did not beat the gs, he tied, very believable.
he does say in his sig that he has headers, meaning he gives up only 8-10 hp to the gs
my personal experience with my stock cl-s, i have kept up with clk430 and 01 rustang vert 5 speed from a roll,
he ain't lyin

I think it's a tweak on the VVTi-L...or it's the by-product of an improved Intake manifold....or intake system in general...my friend was telling me when he was testing the GS430...those things have an incredible intake system...very hard to improve on...

Actually the the GS 400 has a 4.0 liter 32valve V-8 with VVTi and the GS 430 has been enlarged to 4.3 Liters...

Lexus is very conservative about hp figures with the best automatic trannies in the business so that power really hits the floor also that engine can be tuned for three times as much power.....

Nice talking to ya'll!

hmm; i say everyone cut the shit. The CL-S' are fast. but theres no way on earth a stock CLS can beat a stock GS400. I own a GS400 and i've driven my frends CLS many many times. No way in gods name could the CL have beaten the GS unless u launced even more perfect than perfect, and the other guy took it easy on u and didn't gun the engine. Other than that u got lucky somehow.

Look. For the last freaking time, I did not BEAT an GS400 in a race. I pulled even with him at 70. He was trying. I was trying. And finally, my CL-S is not stock. Look at my SIG before you bash. I have an Intake and Headers. Also, the GS400 is not THAT fast. I'll give it 14.6 on the 1/4... We only ran from 0-70.

This is the last time I write here on this topic. I see no need to try and prove myself again. If you don't believe me, try me with your "wonderful" GS400.
