New CL in snow - good or bad?

Hi guys. First of all congrats to all of you on great cars. In early January I was debating getting a new CL or a new Audi A4. I live in Iowa and I had to drive 2 hours to Des Moines for a dealer that had Acura. They also had Audi so I got to drive both back to back. As luck would have it the roads were a little slick. I drove the CL first and it was very unstable and really scared me. Then the Audi was really solid and I felt very comfortable on the slick roads. I bought a 97 A4 because I found a really good deal on a low mileage one. I have been disappointed with reliability in just a couple of months. I have some money sitting by and I'm considering a switch.

Question: How do YOU think YOUR CL (or Type S) handles slick roads? Was this just me being paranoid and scaring myself or was I justly scared? It would be helpful if you could include comparisons to other vehicles you've owned or driven in adverse weahter. Thank you in advance.

Alex

We didn't have too bad of a winter in NJ this year, but when it did snow the Type-S handled VERY well for me. A couple of times when I tried to go too fast, the VSA kicked in and kept me from skidding around. I'd say that it's on par with any other front wheel drive car out there, it won't keep up with your quattro but it also won't be in the shop all of the time (sorry about that, Audi's are nice cars)

I live in Central Jersey and this winter did we get a taste of snow!! I am very satisfied with the CL traction in snow and I know the electronic traction worked great also. One time I was doing 35mph in five inches of snow( it felt like 75mph! ) and it was fun and controllable.

coming straight to you from CANADA!

this car is better than my dads Lexus RX 300 in the snow.

on the road, this car will go ANYWHERE a SUV will go, DO NOT expect to get stuck in any snow.

i only got stuck once this year, and this was cause i had FORGOT to turn the FOOT BRAKE (e-brake) off..haha, it was funny..

this is with stock tires too.

BUT.. if your like me, and you dont want to give up too much of your driving habits, grab some snow tires..my recomendation, Nokian Hallekelpata's..aka best snow tires (tyres) in the WORLD..their made in Finland, and they are just AWSOME...but them on some TL rims and look good at the same time.

with these tires, you can drive just like you would in the summer with your parents beside you.

I chickened out this year. I am a Southern California boy without too much experience in the snow. I opted for a set of TL 16" rims and 205-60-16 Blizzak MZ02 snow tires. Total cost was a little over $500 and I felt much better. No doubt the AUdi is unbelievable in the snow and I want an A4 but no dealing to be done here on leases.

Eastern PA here, about 50 miles south of Allentown.
I didn't have any trouble in our snow. Just gear down to 2nd (not using the sportshift) and you will be OK on rural streets. The car is pretty heavy, so getting stuck would be difficult.
Just watch, the back end will come out on slush if you go too fast. Its like a hammer thrown through the air, the handle is pretty much along for the ride. Most of the CLs weight is in the front.

One major problem which I experienced with the Type-S in snow, is that you can't put on chains if needed. I can't believe this shit.

I can’t believe all of the comments here saying how great this car performs with the stock tires.
It’s OK in the snow, but I wouldn’t go as far as saying that it went through 160+ inches of snow without a problem.
I am guessing that for some of these people the CL is their first front-wheel-drive vehicle.

I live in a very rural area on top of a long and winding road.
I see more deer in my back yard then I do snowplows on the road out front.

Like gto2050, I went with set of TL 16" rims and 205-60-16 BLIZZAK MZ02 snow tires.
Before I put them on I took the car out once in about 4” of snow with the stock rubber and did NOT like the way it handled.
It started out and stopped fine, but cornering at anything over 5MPH was treacherous.
With the BLIZZAK's on I felt much safer and made it home and up my 200ft long driveway through each of the storms we had this year.

The snows are off now and I enjoyed the 60+ degree weather today.

Here is a shot from colder days in December:

My CLS did pretty good. If it was real slushy it would slide a little but VSA seemsed to correct a lot of errors. I think with winter tires on it it would handle pretty good in the winter. Also most of the roads are plowed pretty well so you only have the issue some of the time.

This is my 13th Honda/Acura product so it definitely is not the first time I've driven a front wheel drive car in NYS. I never said I drove through 160" of snow at once, I just said we got that amount all year. I never got stuck, had to push, rock the car, or have it towed, so considering the amount of snow we had the cl did great. BTW, I see more plows than deer, tho at least 4 were in my backyard every morning.
