New Cl-S 6 speed Owner with Questions

Hey everyone. I picked up a 2003 CL-S 6 speed two weeks ago, and so far I'm loving it, but I do have a few questions. And I did try to search for the answers, but I ended up with results that were over 100 pages long, so I was probably doing that wrong. Anyway, here are the questions:

1. Sometimes when pressing the clutch or the gas pedal I feel a vibration or a tingling from the pedal. It's hard to describe, but it is something I can feel through my shoes with both the clutch and the gas. Has anyone else experienced this?

2. Shifting into second gear is not as smooth as the other gears. It doesn't grind or anything, it's just not as smooth (or snick-snick) as the other gears. Is this normal?

3. Every now and then the climate control system sighs or hisses. I did a search and I see I'm not the first to hear this. The jury was split as to whether it was normal or a problem. Any new input on the cause?

4. Sometimes the engine sputters a bit at idle. Others mentioned that this may be related to the a/c and is nothing to worry about.

So really I just want to know if these things are anything that I should be worried about. This car is my first "nice" car and I want to make sure I don't have any problems.

Thanks!!

Welcome and Congratulations!

My answers -

1) Nope.

The clutch engagement does take some getting used too, but I don't think it's harsh. I'd say reassess this after a week of driving to get over the 'getting used to it' factor.

2) Some people have described this and say that it goes away as the transmission wears in. I never had this though. My shifting has been buttery smooth from day one. From posts on these forums, I'd say this is probably normal.

Of course, I think there was one poster who described this and got his CL diagnosed with bad synchros and had his transmission replaced. If this is a real issue for you I'd point it out to your dealer to get it documented or even fixed.

3) Normal.

4) I've heard this mentioned too, but once again, I've not experienced it. Supposedly there is a TSB on misfires, and I'm not sure if this is what you're feeling. I'd point it out to the dealer too, just in case.

If this is just the a/c compressor kicking in then it's probably normal. The a/c compressor ikicking it is noticible at times.

The CL FAQ linked in my signature makes for good reading. It's a bit dated (pre-M/T) but has a lot of good information. Enjoy.

My 6sp is the same way. 2nd gear will smooth over time. Be patient.

Mine is kinda rough (2nd gear) when the transmission is not at ideal temp. After 10 mins it dissapears.

Thanks for the info and well wishes. This car is more solid and fun to drive than anything I've had before. I know I'm gonna get myself in trouble in a car that does 80 in 6th gear at less than 3000 rpms. I find myself not realizing how fast I am going.

Most of the things I was experiencing were just different than other cars I've had, so I just wanted to make sure everything was alright.

I look forward to being able to share my 2 cents with everyone. Thanks again!!

Joe

All that you are experiencing is normal. Judge the car when it is completely warmed up, and reaches 1,000 miles then repost.

However, when you get your first paint ding, I am expecting a rant from you.

Got my six speed a few weeks ago - you need to shift at a minimum 4k rpms. Keep it in the power band!

Also, do the right thing and order the Comptech headers!

The upshift into 2nd is my only annoyance with the transmission. How many miles did it take to smooth out?

Thats nuts. For normal everyday driving most of the time you will be between 2,000 and 3,500 RPM. Power band is only for when you need (guess what?) extra POWER.

Congrats - you'll be please with the ride.

I got some rattle issues that i will be addressing also when i go in for my 6000 km service (first 2 services are free of charge). Sunroof rattle, glove box rattle and something in the rear rattle.

Other than that the car is great - needs springs and sways tho.

I've got 21k on the clock and 2nd still feels like my old Accord with a worn syncro half the time. Been that way since day 1 and the complaint is logged at two dealers. Everyone says it normal. Funny how no other Acura or Honda I've drive does it but whatever. If they tell me I need a new tranny after the warranty runs out someone's getting shot.

I seen other people mention issues with the syncro. Is this something I should bring to the dealer's attention right away, or just wait it out to see if it disappears? Are they likely to even admit that there is a standing issue with syncros?

I've driven a stick for seven years and never had a clutch problem, so I know that is not the problem, but I can picture a dealer saying that it is somehow my fault, and that is something I'd like to avoid.

What does a "worn" syncro feel like?

Yeah of course the 2nd dealer I saw about it blamed me. But it only happens on the 1-2 upshift and even then, not always. And YES I am fully depressing the clutch before changing gears. I can consciously clutch, pause, and slowing pull it back and it will grind. Or I can shift as fast and hard as possible and its fine. Very random. The pattern I can see at all is that its worse when its cold (ie. been sitting for a long time) and its more likely to do it when I'm accelerating in a left turn, like making a left turn acrosss a 4 lane street and shifting into 2nd just before I get the wheels straight. This isn't even WOT. Sometimes it has this very wierd feeing I can't even describe. It just feels like something's getting hung up but yet not grinding. Other times its like "damn, did I even clutch?" If I was starting to let the clutch out before the shift was completed, I'd expect that I would have done it at least once on some other shift in the 15 months I've owned the car. But no. Only 1-2.

I agree with mt6forlife's description. Its only 1-2 and very random. I thought I read somewhere that S2000's and RSX 6 speeds had a similar problem with 1-->2.

The weirdest thing about this is that the 3-->2 downshift is always smooth (well 90%). If it was a synchro problem I would expect any shift into 2 would be a problem. ???????

Agreed. Downshifting into 2nd from any gear at any rpm is fine 90% of the time. And even when it isn't smooth, its never as bad as the 1-2 upshift when its acting up. Maybe the problem is with 1st gear. Like somethings binding up or something. I wish I knew more about the inner workings of transmissions to hazard a better guess.
