I have found that using leather moisturizer seems to preserve the new car smell a bit more...that or the fragrance for the moisturizer was "New Car Smell." Oh...never put moisturizer on the perforated part of the seat...you'll never get it out.

I'm with Silver Lana on this one... would using a leather cleaner/conditioner like Lexol bring back the smell? Or is it one of those, "once it's gone, it's gone" kinda things?

I use Zaino leather care products and it definately helps to bring back the new car smell... but leather alone will never trully get that smell back.

Griots Garage makes a product called New Car Scent... and I would bet (guaging on the quality of their products) that it is pretty good. If someone gets it let me know how it is... griotsgarage.com

My 89' Legend still retains that new car
smell everyone is chatting about. The dealer
I purchased this car from must have sprayed
or put some fragrance in the air ducts
because the aroma originates from the air
vents. Especially when the air conditioner
is turned on. Based off this, I would assume
its possible to purchase some can of new
car smell.

I've honestly thought about going back
to the dealer and asking about where I
can buy some more, but they went out of
business. Now a Lincoln dealership took
over the lot. Count me in as a fellow
addict.

LOL! You guys crack me up.

marko: read what I said above your reply about Zaino.

also... about the new car smell from the dealer...

My sister used to have a '98 Prelude... when she bought it the dealer gave her a little spray bottle of "New Car Smell" that had the Honda logo on the label. I bet you could find that somewhere.

Also... I hear Lexus dealers spray all their cars with a "new car smell". Call up one of the parts departments.

Much of what we describe as "New Car Smell" comes from the plastics- de plasticizing(breaking down), the plastics release chemicals resulting in the smell. This process slows as the car gets older and the smell begins to fade. I have seen bottles of car deodorizor labeled New Car Smell. Try and auto-parts store.

I use Air Spencer CS-X3 (Blue cartridge "Squash")

the smell compliments the new leather smell PERFECTLY. It's not a strong or a sharp smell but mild and soothing hehe

To me, in storage, leaving the sunroof just a tad open and having the freshener keeps and preserves the leather smell in cool temps.

Yeah!!!!! I use that stuff too. It's the best smell out there. Period. Well...second best, right after the new car smell.

As a former mechanical engineer I can tell you 100% what the "new car smell" we all have grown to love is.

It's GLUE.

Yes, glue. When any new car is built about 20% of it is glued together. Panels, headliners, etc... This glue has a special smell, which we have lovingly dubbed "new car smell". It has nothing to do with the leather or whatever.

Maybe this helps explain why the new car smell makes one of our members feel "dizzy".

I'm creeping up on 9K miles and I was just recently told that I still have "it" -- the new car smell. I guess I must have gotten used to it because I don't think so!

If it actually is some sort of glue then I wonder as well if they are certain concentrations/levels where it may be toxic. I know some people cannot stand it and yet some of us here seem to find it intoxicating.. can it be some form of strange drug that we get high on?.. prob not.. just posing the question. =P

Whatever it is, they need to start bottling it up and selling it to the general public cuz we love the smell.

Not to throw a snag in the glue solution, but when I purchased my Maxima, it was two years old, and it had the new car smell. I purchased it from the Nissan dealership. What's up with that.

My father is a chemical engineer who specializes in fine fragrances etc.His job is to create and produce fragrances used in a wide range of products ranging from perfume to the way Tide detergent smells.I asked him many years ago what might be involved in producing an air freshener that replicated the scent of a new car.He smiled and told me it was unlikely such a product could be made possible, his reasoning was this:the smell or scent is composed of a wide variety of solvents that are used in making the car for instance Toluene is used in many adhesives there are also a wide variety of solvents used in the production of plastics vinyls the paint the car is painted with etc. When the car is new many of these solvents are still evaporating from the materials they are used in,the concentration levels are below any harmful levels ,however since you are entirely surrounded by them you will notice them.My father then told me that in order to make an effective air freshener the scent in it would have to be composed in part on these solvents, but in order to make it effective from such a small package as an air freshener the concentration levels of scent required would most likely make the air freshener a very dangerous thing to have hanging in your car.Number one solvents are usually very flammable number two they are known carcinogens three they can make you dizzy or worse pass out, bottom line

Whew...I was just about to dip my seats in a toluene bath.
Instead I'll just dip my hard drives to give them that fresh smell.
I should be back online in a few secs.
