New Acura Coupe when?
I know it's been discussed, but it is weird that there's nothing about a new coupe, esp with the TL's sales success and now the RL is on the market and the new small SUV is next? Does it mean there really isn't a coupe planned for any upcoming cycle? how can they ignore the success of the Nissan, Infiniti, and BMW coupes for so long? I know the real money is in the sedans and SUVs, but the coupes are where the excitement is IMO and contributes to Acura's 'sporty' image they are pushing.
I love my CLs but I want to know what future choices I'll have, not ready to go German and the Japanese don't offer anything I want. Even Lexus has nothing in a coupe I want.

As some folks already said in previous posts, it needs to borrow the 300 horses engine (or maybe tweak it more if possible), and the SH-AWD from the RL in order to be considered a great choice against the crowd. All the goodies like navi, dvd-audio, bluetooth, sensor on every window/sun roof, need to play in the new coupe.
I will consider as a good choice maybe by late 2006 if Acura decides to produce it.

Somebody made a great photochop of what a new CL based off the TL might look like, I'll see if I can dig it up ..
EDIT: found

I would be the first one in line if it looked even remotely close to that![Wink](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
oh and it would have to have good brakes, rwd or awd, 300+ horses, three pedals and six forward gears.

"If Acura makes one don't expect to see it till 08 or later. They change their lines every 3-4 years."
What??
2004 would have been the 4th year of the 2G CL, so you're saying 7 years after the 01 CL there will be a new coupe?. 2001 + 3 or 4 = 2004 or 2005.
1987.5 to 1990 - 1st Gen Legend Coupe
1991 to 1995 - 2nd Gen Legend Coupe
1997 to 1999 - 1st Gen CL Coupe
2000(1) - 2003 - 2nd Gen CL Coupe
the new coupe would have been an 04. there were no 3-4 year gaps before. I see no gaps or 1 year gaps.
I think it will be out in ayear or 2, it's already a year late.

That would be the first time Acura did not produce a coupe along with the sedans. I know on the 1G Legend there was a half year delay for the coupe. not sure about the 91 Legends. I think now that since it may not be associated with a sedan theat it will be a whole new design itself. cool. that's a first too. (notwithstanding the NSX).

http://vtec.net/modelmatrix/ is usually pretty accurate with these things.
Acura better have one hell of a coupe planned, 'cause in the $40-50K range there are alot of nice cars to compete with.

If Acura makes a new coupe, expect it to be a bit pricey (and I wouldn't bet on it in the first place). In Acura's line up, they already offer a RSX, TSX, and TL which covers any new model pricing that may be worth it (Acura has yet to establish itself as a true luxury car company). The new RSX-based SUV will also further crowd Acura's line up. They consider all there cars to be sporty, offering a 6 speed manual in every car, so I think there's no chance in hell they'll be making a coupe any time soon, especially given the flop in sales of the 02 and 03 CL. If they ever do make one, it will be years down the line.

But in the same respect I think alot of the reason people flocked away from the 2g CL's was that even in the type S form, they really werent that much of a sports coupe in stock form. I'm not saying I don't love my CL but come on .. 4x4 suspension, crappy brakes, fwd, and up until 03, no manual option. Look how many people flocked to the G35 sport coupe .. I see so many G's on the road it amazes me. decent suspension, Brembo's (on 6mt), rwd, 280hp that is being upped to 295 for the 2005 model year, 18s, and a 6spd manual.
I think acura has the potential to do it right and if they really wanted to put money into the project they could produce an awesome sport coupe. They just need to lose the fwd platform, make the move to rwd (I doubt) or the sh-awd. then they need to stop sharing suspension platforms with the MDX, maybe take the brakes off the NSX, get some nice wheels and the 3.5L out of the new RL .. oh and keep it balanced and on the light side

I would think the earliest would be when the TL is redone, probably in 2008 or 09. Acura/Honda is a very conservative, risk-averse company and Acura certainly doesn't fully understand the upscale American market (which is why Lexus has done so well even though they came later).
What they didn't understand with the CL is that for somebody to spend more than econobox money on a coupe the car needs to overcome being impractical. It needs to look hot, offer great performance, etc. Sorta like the G35. The CL did not offer knockout looks, great performance, etc.
I'd except a V8 before another coupe.

They dropped the Prelude, the NSX, and now the CL. I can't help but think they will offer a new lux coupe within the next year or two. Acura has never gone longer without one,
and with Acura's emphasis on sport it makes no sense not to have a coupe above the RSX. They're making plenty of money off of TL, TSX, and MDX sales.

be sure to see a coupe in the future 123456SPEED. No ETA now.
Honda is playing smart now.
They need to untighten the Acura brand from Honda for marketing purposes. It looks better. My VIN number has a Honda Logo. Try to find a Nissan Logo in an Infiniti, or a Toyota Logo in a Lexus. Also, Infiniti has its own financial service, as Nissan has its own Motor Acceptance Corporation. We at Acura lease from American Honda Finance Corporation.
No V8s for Honda, that is not smart move IMO. The trend is to be more "environment-friendly", fuel efficient (like aditional hybrid engines). Honda has the engeneering to build the best 4 bangers and V6 engines in the world (mainstream).
I am still hoping to see a coupe with drivetrain / options from the RL.

The NSX has not been dropped. The 05 models will arrive shortly. Where'd you get your wrong info?
I think if you buy a Lexus many do say 'Toyota' on them. Infiniti's use Nissan and Ford key fobs. Don't know about the glass though.

I read that the redesign for the NSX that has been talked about for quite a while was dropped late in the process this year. Did that change? Was supposed to be out in a year or so. I know the current NSX is still around, selling, what, a few a month now, it's dead at it's asking price of $80k now.
I did read a rumour of a downscaled hi-end (NSX) coupe to replace both the CL and the NSX. combining both those markets. Honda had the Accord coupe fill the Prelude niche.
THe 2 door TL pix were at tl.com - found it. hope the creator doesn't mind. skilled photoshopper! I'd want a little more bumper on the front.

if they want to put something out to dwarf the competition I think honda has to start work on a V8... it probably can still be fuel efficient and probably wouldnt even have to be that large .. if they can make that much power out of a v6 I'm sure they could make a V8 with decent potential.

I don't see a V8 in HondAcura's future at all. I think we may see a rear drive coupe before a V8. If they didn't put one in the $50k RL they ain't putting one in anything else. this is why Acuras are cheaper, front wheel V6. it's clear, hybrid and all wheel drive is where Acura is going for more hp.

Right but if they launched the newly designed car with the new V8, where would it leave room to upgrade in the future? I doubt they would upgrade the car and not give it more power .. all the other big luxury cars on the market are coming with more and more power .. S class benz, LS lexus, M45, etc .. if they want to keep up they are going to have to do something unless they have some amazing tricks left for the J series motor .. or forced induction.

I think there is a market for less power and V6, my CL feels like enough for me. what';s the point. just design a great car, cars don't just sell by hp except for a few buyers. It if looks great and has lots of features I want I can forgo 350+ hp. I wouldn't buy the G35 if it had 400hp.

The NSX runs $89,000. We got in the 05 brochures so I think it's safe to say it's still being produced. I have heard nothing to confirm that they will kill the car. It is a very important prestige vehicle for Honda. The RDX will prove the hybrid AWD concept so I'm sure, eventually, all Acuras will be hybrid and AWD. Will just take time.
The biggest problem is that the RL is also sold outside North America and Honda seems opposed to offering a North American-only version of this car, except for minor changes. Acura's biggest problem now I think is marketing themselves... or, rather, their lack of it. And they need to seperate Honda from Acura..!

I’m quite content right now, but I’ll be going to BMW-land or elsewhere if Acura doesn’t come through with a decent coupe w/manual in a few years when I’m ready to buy.
And I've been with Acura since 1991.

A CL can't provide more excitement than a TL does. In fact, TL looks sportier than CL Type S, more compact and tight, so why does Acura/Honda risk it to make another coupe that might not sell. If you really need to make a coupe sell well, it MUST look extremely sporty, not a two door luxury car that has a long trunk. A sports coupe doesn't need practicality, it needs look more. And in my opinion G35 coupe and 330Ci/325Ci are well done in the look department. Look at Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, and any other unanimously agreed good looking sports car, which one has a long trunk? NONE. They must be wide and low, with longer hood and shorter trunk. RSX is much more sporty looking than the outgoing CL. That is the way to make a sports coupe.

This is about "Sport Coupe" vs. Luxuary Coupe............Luxary Coupes don't sell in the volumes to satify the Japanese executive's in Japan, therefore I think it will be a "LONG" time before Honda or Acura builds another Luxuary coupe ! What is the RSX classified as ?
