it'd probably cost just about as much to convert my CL-P into a Type-S. You're not alone.. I have regrets too...
Where am i going with this? Well, sorry to hurt you man.. but forget it. All parts are going to have to be factory OEM. I'm sure it can be done though for about $5-6,000.

Anything can be done, but you would probably be better off to:

Sell current car and buy Navi version (probably cheaper and cleaner than all of the hack and cut to convert.)

or

See if you can get an Alpine Nav system. They have additional features and they have detailed maps for cities *not* in the Acura/Alpine unit. (Hopefully, the Acura and Alpine people with move all of the data into our under filled DVD.)

Your best bet is to find someone that works for honda that can sell you the parts at cost. You can probably do it for under 3500.

WebToker -- you've definitely got some very cool friends at Honda. This is meant as a compliment.

I've added up the "replacement" costs of major parts for some of the cars if owned. If you go into a dealer and compare the sticker price to the price of the major components as sold by the parts department, your talking about making an "original" car from replacement parts for about 3-5 times the invoice of the car.

If you had said, "find a wrecked car with an intact Nav system. Or ask around for a S NAVI that shouldn't have been totaled...
", I would believe you.

So, knowing you look around at stuff a bit, do you have a connection at Honda/Acura that gets you parts at manufacture's cost (or below cost) *or* do you have a friend with sticky hands.

BTW -- the aftermarket Alpine unit can be obtained for less than the cost of the original *and* it plays DVD movies (without additions) and comes with a more detailed map. AND I do have a NAVI unit that I really like.

for 4000

just got trade it in and get the navi and a new car. it'll be much worth it since u'll have less problems since it came w/ it vs. adding it. and if u get a new car less miles. and that new car smell again.

TO ALL PEOPLE WITH A NON-NAVIGATION CL'S!!

FUCK THE STOCK NAVIGATION.

Go to www.alpine1.com
Buy youself their DVD navigation system. Is a TV, DVD player, works AROUND THE WORLD (27DVD's)and a whole other SLEW of options. YOU WOULD HAVE TO BE AN IDIOT TO PAY 4 GRAND FOR A STOCK NAVIGATION. IF YOU BOUGHT IT AT THE TIME YOU BOUGHT YOUR CAR, then the stock is good, cause its only 2 grand. The alpine one is just as good in the navigation department, and better in every other way...go for it.

I had a buddy over at BMW (with that car). The guy used to fix Harley's on the side. But the best he could do there, was 15-25% off on "some" parts. And he was a very good budy.

Please share your secrets. How about a post on getting an inside helper?

I can only talk from experience with Nissan. I also own a 95 240sx and I get all parts at cost. Most of the time its close to 35 - 45 % off.

now let me tell you why you SHOULD get teh stock navigation.
Yes I know the stock one is based out of the alpine.

But read me out here.

The alpine does not look as good as the stock look w/ the lcd.

When using the alpine your car must be STOPED completely inorder to put in a destination. Which in my point useless. what are u gonna do pull over on a high way?? please....

The alpine system will NOT Mute the front speakers when giving voice directions so you have to have your radio lowered all the time.

FIRST, STOP YELLING!!!
SECOND, STOP YELLING!!!
THIRD, STOP YELLING!!!

Nirv, would you really go to the other side of the world with your CL with its upgraded ALPHINE NAVI? How much would it cost to ship your CL so you can show off (for example) the Japanese people that you have one PHAT ALPHINE NAVI? They'd probably laugh at your ASS.

"Who needs a NAVI, when I know where I'm at?" If you drive around the same places all the time you don't need it. When you start noticing that you have a nice car and that the Nation is sooo BIG, and you finally want to see more. Then drive that baby to where your heart takes you and it will do its best to take you there.

I agree with NOVAwhite, Webtoker and FabV when they pointed out the PLUSes of owning the stock NAVI. Feel free to voice your opinion on the PLUSes of having an ALPH instead of a STOCK navi. BUT YOU REALLY SHOULD STOP YELLING!!!

You can upgrade to the Nav version. It costs about $32,000 but if you take the old parts back, you can get about $26,000 in return.

The only downside is that the housing for the nav is a little large and heavy to carry -
