Navi no big deal anymore

Just like everything else, it's filtering into the mainstream autos. It's an option on new Camry's and Maxima's now. It's been an option on Honda Odyssey's, pretty soon on Accord's I'm sure. So what's going to be exclusive to "premium" cars in the future?

I never thought it was *exclusiveness* that made me buy it, it was how I felt it complemented the look of the interior.

Agreed. Now I wish I'd have beat on the dealer a bit more for one with NAVI. But none the less I still love this car.

It may be no big deal for you because you see and use the navi everyday. But for those who don't have one (i.e. hot chicks you pick up) it is a very impressive feature.

I personally have had the navi now for over 6 months and I still am finding new features that make finding places so easy.

I almost want to say the Navi will never be standard equipment on all cars (like a radio is) ever; if you are reading this that means in your lifetime.

Yeah.. maybe it'll be standard now in the TL/CL instead of a fockin $2000 option!!

It'll stay an option for the Camary and Accords.
btw, they get HIDs too..

But don't fret about it.. if these other cars are starting to get these options.. just look ahead for whats going to be standard on our cars.. they are going to have to do some sort of upgrade to the TL/CL to differentiate them from the Accord and to keep it "Luxury"

I hope the new Accords come with navi units and the HIDs. That way if I stick with an Accord it will have some new toys on it.

yeah, i didn't really think it was worth the 2k i spent on it, but it does add a nice touch to the interior (i barely use it anymore, maybe once every 2-3 weeks)..i don't know if this is good or bad, but most of my friends that sat in my car are like "nice custom tv screen"...only to find out it's "just" a navigation system...oh well, at least i can pretend it's a tv

If you look at it, most cars, luxury or not all have the same features at one point or not, if it has side airbags, heated seats, HID lights, leather interior....

what car wouldn't have all these features at some point in the future. I'm hoping they'll continue to have Navi standard and upgrade us with parking cameras (hey even a built in security camera) or navi theft detection... you still the car, car calls police and tracks itself.... etc etc.

We'll see if it stays around. Acura has signed a deal with GM and are putting "OnStar" in the RL. We'll see if they filter it down to the TL and CL.

I'll say it again. Navi will never be a standard option on ALL vehicles. Cars like Dodge Neon, Nissan pickups, and school buses and 18-wheeler trucks will never get Navi systems. Based on two things: cost, if it will lower the cost even by $100 by forgoing Navi, it will be done and will end up being an option (since it's not safety related and can't be recalled j/k ) and 2) because I am thinking by that time, we will have move on to something else in 10 years, perhaps a heads-up display on the windshield that will project maps in front of you.

I agree. It pisses me off. Xenons and Navi should be in the "luxury" realm... PERIOD. Fuck the rest...

But it comes down to..if you make 'em...and it looks cool...the aftermarket can copy them and usually improve it.

The Navi will be like airbags and ABS. When they first came out they were only available on high-end cars. Now there pretty much standard. Remember, the more they sell the cheaper the per unit costs are. Also, there's ways to reduce the cost by charging advertisers for appearing in the systems ala the yellow pages business model. However you'd need a larger audience than what exists now to make it work. I think that within five years you'll start to see Navi available on Malibu class cars for $500-800. Just my two cents.

You know that the price is coming down when...

I got a Delorme offer (the map folks), and the complete GPS unit (on serial cable) for around 50 bucks...

What does that say about the prices (when added to the low costs of CPUs and DVDs)...

They are going to be ubiquitous

not to knock Honda or Acura but most of the fancy features on the CL or CL-S will be on the Accord(03). Not to knock the CL but other than fancier Interior, better stereo, and slighty bigger motor what's the point?
(I'm gonna probably go with a CL-S next car but see what i'm saying with them taking HIDs, and Navi will be offered) I don't mind if they do this on the Accords if maybe they'd have Navi on all CL's or maybe better foglights or better yet FACTORY BODY KIT
or maybe put the 3.5 in it. I know it will be only a year or 2 from the time the 03 accord till the generation 3 CLs hit the floor but I'm still mad

hahaha
IMO, I'd say the following are going to set
the bar for "luxury"

1. "smart" cruise control able to regulate distance like the Lex LS 430 and high end mercedes
2. voice command navigation/sound system/climate control like the Q45

and maybe..
3. NAVI diagnostics operating system: e.g. tire pressure sensors, engine readings,
